The Importance of the Trade in the Indian Ocean in the Story of Sinbad

The story in this article was written by anonymous Arab storytellers who had told the story of Sinbad and his adventures in the Indian Ocean. The stories were legends created around the 14th century and come from folk tales of Iraq and Egypt. The story in this article is one of seven voyages that Sinbad takes, each one getting more exciting and dangerous. Sinbad was a merchant from Baghdad, and had spent a lot of money in his youth so he decided to take a voyage to some islands and trade with people.

He sets out in the beginning of the tale with a boat that is loaded with goods and people and sets sail towards the East Indies. He goes to several islands and sells his goods at those places.

Suddenly, they see an island and go to it. Unfortunately, it is actually the back of a whale and Sinbad doesn’t make it to the ship on time. He clings to a piece of wood and floats out in the ocean until finally he finds an island.

At the island are a group of people who are grooms of the King Mihrage, who ruled the isle. Sinbad makes friends with them and finally a ship comes to the island. The captain tells the story of Sinbad and how they lost him at sea, so they were going to sell his things. Sinbad reveals himself, and after a while the captain believes it is he. Before Sinbad leaves he gives presents to the King and receives greater goods in return.

After he returns home for a while Sinbad decides to go on another adventure. The article ends here, although there are more stories about Sinbad. During the story they also talked about these mythical “sea-horses”, which were living on the island.

The purpose of this story was to provide entertainment for the people of Iraq and the other countries around it. One can assume that these stories (especially about Sinbad) were very popular among a lot of people, and the stories were shared among everyone. Sinbad was a smart and resourceful person, and I imagine that he was a hero to a lot of the children at the time. He is still a popular figure today, and movies have been made about him that portray him as courageous and successful. He ends up getting a lot of money with his expeditions and this shows that money was important in Iraq and merchants were seen as rich people, if they were successful.

This article is in this book because it shows us how important the Indian Ocean and trading among different countries was to these people. The only way, in many cases, to transport goods was by ship and the Indian Ocean provided that. Also, it is noted that people of Iraq and the countries surrounding the Ocean viewed the ocean as a mysterious and dangerous place, which it still is today. In many of the Sinbad stories there are mythical creatures that he fights and people wanted to believe that those creatures existed. While we have explored the ocean more than the 14th century, it relates to us now because there is still a lot we don’t know and people still believe in things such as Nessie and Atlantis.

The main ideas of this story were that Sinbad was successful because he went out and decided not to waste his money by being idle, trade was very important in the Indian Ocean in the 14th century, people didn’t have a very good idea of what lived in the ocean, and it shows that ideas traveled via the Ocean because this story was a culmination of fables from all different countries. It is really neat that this story still survives today and is still popular. It shows that this was a big part of Iraqi culture and helps us relate to them.
