The Impact of the Progressive Movement on Society

After watching this week’s screencast and videos on the Progressive Movement, I learned interesting and new information about what factors led The Progressive Movement and when it took place. Also, I learned who the leaders were during that time and what their ideas were for the Progressive Movement. What really stood out to me after watching the videos and screencast were the changes in the United States that occurred due to the efforts of the progressives. After watching the screencast and video, I learned so many different factors that led the Progressive movement and how it brought social change and changed political reform.

While learning about the Progressive Movement, I learned that it took place during 1890- 1920.

The Progressive movement was a major impact to society because it brought social change and eventually improved the political side of America. The Progressive movement improved societies and tried to prevent industrialization and many more that was occurring in America. The progressive movement truly believed that professionals could make society better, they transpired after the 1800’s after the civil war occurred.

Professionals trusted in themselves by hoping to make society better because they were educated from experience and from learning formal education. Also, professionals were very organized and they only regulated themselves.

They considered themselves better and special because they could only practice and understand their profession in the leadership of changing society for the better. Professionals seized the importance of science and believed in action and experimentation as well as speech and efficiency.

They used science heavily, they believed that organization and the scientific method was vital and felt as if the universe could be improved from it, and they would conduct their studies as they were very optimistic and activist and had high hopes that they could change society with their experiments. During the 19th century there were some aspiring leaders with great ideas that could make society better. Charles Darwin was very popular for creating the reform of Darwinism.

Darwin was known for Condemned laisses- faire, and government active solving social problems; he believed that evolution could be advanced if the environment was altered and the humanity would improve. Also, William James and John Dewey were great leaders during the 19th century. They invented Pragmatism, believing that education was a way to help people change and the process over content was vital in the education process, engaging in the experience was their main key when they presented Pragmatism. Fredrick Taylor, also known as an aspiring leader, is known for creating Taylorism. Taylor’s main focus for Taylorism was to come up with the scientific management and his goals were set out to increase productivity as well as cut cost and save time and labor.

The social gospel was a movement that the liberal protestants created and they embraced progressives, they were highly favored during this time. The Social Gospel wasn’t just about changing souls, but It was about changing the society too. Social Gospel believed that their Christian teachings applied to daily lives of ordinary people, they are very popular for their business Salvation Army, that’s still in business till this day. Lastly, Teddy Roosevelt is favored by most for a lot that he has done during the Progressive Movement. Roosevelt was the president when the Progressive era occurred and he brought change to a lot while in office to better societies all over America. Roosevelt created the Square Deal, and he supported Sherman anti-trust act. Roosevelt is also remembered for meditating the Anthracite Coal Strike in 1902, and he supported the interstate commerce commission.

Roosevelt also passed the food, drug, and meat inspection act. Overall, there were immense changes in the United States that occurred because of the efforts of the progressive movement led by aspiring leaders. If the progressive movement never took place we would still have problems with Industrialization, misconduct from the government, and even urbanization. When the Progressive Movement took place, it helped America in a preferable way. Honestly, if The Progressive Movement never occurred America wouldn’t be what it is today. The leaders that changed America during the progressive era will always be remembered and respected for improving it and making it better than what it was, and because of their beliefs they made America great all over again.
