The Idea of Free Meal and Healthy Food Choices in American Colleges

Topics: Food

As a college student myself, I have always found it difficult to maintain a healthy diet during school. For one, many college students have so many other worries including studies, financial needs, and relationships the last worry we should have is what or if we will eat. Therefore, America’s universities should consider giving college students free meal plan with healthy choices. Offering college students free meal plans with healthy choices will allow students to have an overall better performance in school and alleviate some of the financial requirements to attend college.

The saying, “you are what you eat,” is a common saying for many reasons. A college student without a meal plan may only have five bucks left in their account for the remaining of the week. Therefore the quickest and easiest meal to purchase for five bucks would be a greasy burger and fries. Now that the student has ate this horrific meal they start to become tired more easily and have a hard time focusing in class.

While a student who was able to afford a meal plan they have the option of choosing a less greasy food in which will give them more energy to continue their day. Allowing college students to have a free meal plan gives college students options to choose a healthier meal, which in turn, gives college students a better performance in school.

As stated many of times by college students, college is expensive. Many students walk out of college with a degree and drowned in thousands of dollars of debt.

Offering free meal plans to students can better their financial burdens. Some student choose not to have a meal plan at all because they find it cheaper to pay for food outside of the university. However, if a meal plan is free, students may find it a little more affordable to attend college. An opposing view may say, we have always had college students pay for their meal plan so why change the way the system work now. A student is always offered to pay for a meal plan or choose not to pay for the meal plan. Similar to the real world students have the option to choose a healthy meal or an unhealthy meal. If the university offers free meal this does not guarantee the students will choose a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, a free meal plan with healthy options should not be offered because it will not guarantee students will choose a live a healthy lifestyle.

I believe the system needs to be changed because the amount of students attending college is increasing but the amount of student debt is also increasing. I believe the opposing view is invalid because we do not know the percentage of students that will actually choose a healthier meal over a non-healthy meal. It is hard to determine if the opposing view is correct because college student with or without a meal plan never had an option of choosing an affordable healthy meal. Therefore, I remain with my view on giving college students free meal plans with healthy options.

College students work hard in every aspect in life, whether it’s planning our futures or trying to stay ahead in our current courses. Free and healthy meals is the least bit our government and universities can do for us, because we are the people who will be the next generation of lawyers, senators, judges, doctors, authors and even the next president.
