The Figure of Malcolm X in a Movie by Spike Lee

When the making of this movie threatens to dwarf the movie itself, Spike Lee takes all actions necessary to create an accurate piece so as to not alter or hurt the reputation of Malcolm X Lee works hard to learn all there is to learn about the character so that he can properly tell his story There are some clear limitations when turning a book into a movie, especially when the protagonist of the story is such a monumental figure like Malcolm X Because Spike Lee had never met Malcolm, he was creating his film based off of outside sources like books and people who did know Malcolm themselves.

Some struggles Spike Lee encounters in making a movie out of Malcolm X included issues with people such as Amiri Baraka who lead a group whose purpose was to protect Malcolm’s rights.

Amiri did not want Lee to make the film Lee was also criticized by people of color who said he would not be able to fully understand Malcolm’s points because Spike himself was middle-class and well-educated.

Additionally, Lee had struggled was creating this movie on a budget Lee was asked to shorten the movie, however he denied this requestr Lee felt that if he was going to tell Malcolm‘s story then he wanted to tell Malcolm’s whole true story, not just a part of it. Knowing what Spike Lee went through to create this inspirational film greatly influences my perceptions of his struggles to succeed as a film director.
