The Effects of Internet on Students in Terms of Education

Nowadays, in developing countries for those who have easy access to high speed internet as Tapscott (as cited in Selwyn, 2014) put it,”technology is like the air.” The internet as a technology which plays an undeniable role in individuals’ daily lives over the last decades, has seen a dramatic increase in its availability everywhere such as homes, offices and schools.

Using the internet in education

Today, using the internet can be considered as an inseparable part of education. Thanks to the internet and technology students are easily able to improve their knowledge related to their education ranging from public information to further professional research.

Moreover, the internet poses an important part in communication and interaction between students from all over the world in specific fields of study which can lead to expanding the knowledge boundaries. Last but not least, it provides globally access to free educational materials for students. On the other hand, due to lack of self-control it may have a negative effect on a student’s education and also surfing on the internet can be considered as shallow learning.

While any of these impacts may lead to the student’s academic achievements or underachievement, we should focus on using this technology in the most beneficial way.

Using a number of reliable resources could easily help students improve their level of knowledge and their academic performance in order to carry out their educational research. For instance, in past decades students had to spend a huge amount of time sitting down in libraries and seeking for the newest data around their topic while today they can access a wide range of information at a finger touch.

“The use of internet technology will make it easier for people to obtain several pieces of information and the latest information quickly and effectively.”(Shahibi & Rusli, 2017). However, this may lead to producing duplicate homeworks due to plagiarism.

For those students who study sociology, economics and history being in touch with all the students from different universities with different ranking may lead to limitless thinking. In other words, students around the world can share their point of view and experience due to their particular social economic and historical condition of their country with each other, which means a Greece student can have access to Iranian architect background chatting to his Persian friend easily. “The internet allows and makes it possible for schools and students to exchange knowledge with corporate clusters and organizations related to various subjects.” (Oluwaferanmi, 2017) This can help pupils improve their scholastic achievements through a wide variety of angles.

Additionally, students can have access to the latest curriculums without paying any money on platforms for learning in any time and any place regardless of local circumstances .That is to say a African student with a poor condition of living in remote areas can benefit from the latest resources from Harvard university website or through online free courses on youtube. This equality in learning in respective financial or geographical status has taken place thanks to the validity of the internet.

Based on the study (Zhou,et al.,2016) stated that 95% of college students allocate more than two hours in a day wasting their time sitting in front of their laptops instead of making more effort thinking about the subject and coming up with the ideas on their own. Simply put,it is way easier for them to use other people’s ideas by clicking some key bottoms. ”More and more college students are experiencing excessive dependence on the internet; some of them are even addicted to the internet, which will cause great negative impact on their development.” (Zhang X, et al., 2014)

All in all, using the internet as an educational tool can affect learners’ research and performance in both positive and negative ways. Improving their academic knowledge resulted from having access to enormous upgraded resources, boundaryless thinking which has rooted from communicating and sharing a wide range of opinions and also having equal access to free online educational sources despite the different financial conditions of students are some of the certain impacts of using the internet .Notwithstanding, it can possibly decrease the creativity of a student relying on other people research. Undoubtedly, pupils should try to use the internet sources in order to support their own ideas which can be the most reasonable way.
