The Birth of Creativity in Our Childhood Years

Childhood memories are viewed by so many as just that, simple memories from a time long ago when life was full of games and nothing serious was plaguing our young minds. A perfect example of this would be when I was in the fifth grade and living in one of the many homes we moved around to before finally settling. It was a new house and since the backyard wasn’t as big as our previous home, my cousin and I had to get creative with the games we played.

Creativity is one of my favorite gifts bestowed upon me by my childhood. If I didn’t play games with my friends then I would never be as creative as I am today. Eventually my cousin and I realized that we could both fit comfortably into my dog’s ginormous crate that you’d think was meant for Clifford, “The Big Red Dog’. Upon realizing this, our little minds got working like the spinning gears in a clock’s mechanism.

Gathering supplies for our new fort was done with ease and precision. She would gather all the snacks and games we needed while I went and stuffed as many pillows and blankets into the crate as I could. To top it off, we drowned the outside of the crate in dark blankets so the inside was our own little cave. For extra entertainment we would put on our favorite TV channel, Disney of course, and part the blankets just enough so we could peek through and watch the TV if we wanted to.

All of this was done without much communication between us because we both knew how cool a fort would be made from this crate.

But the days went by and our fort wasn’t getting any cooler, each time she’d come over and we’d set it up from scratch and it was the same thing time and time again. So we had to get more creative, that was apparent. That’s when we devised a game that unknowingly would teach us some life skills in the process. Within the confines of this crate we would pretend that a storm of great destruction was on its way and if we were to survive we had to think fast. At this time in our lives, hr being in the 3rd grade and myself in 5th, we were no stranger to the silly games that we created on a whim. But this one was different. For some reason we would play this particular game constantly. And not because it was ‘off the charts’ on the full scale! This game was challenging, adrenaline rushing, and possibly dangerous even as a game. The reason it could’ve been dangerous was because the crate was one that could fold away for storage reasons and to fold it, all you had to do was slide a few bars from the top and it would collapse. My cousin and I would be in the crate, shaking it to stimulate what a storm might feel like, and forgot that this crate could collapse! But we were on a mission to play a game that I will always remember.

Getting to the point of my life where I am now, I know I owe a lot of it to games in my childhood. And more specifically, the games I played with my cousin. Barbies, house, pretend hurricanes… All of the games were based on possible real life events and I feel more secure now that I exposed myself to life earlier on in the games we played. If these memories were something I discarded like a garbage into a trash can… What kind of person would I be without those adventures? Life is a crazy game as it is and the games I played as a kid were no different. For those without the experience of playing house or with dolls or action figures, I feel pity for on some level. Even if they have life challenging childhood experiences to look back on and that shaped them, in some ways it still isn’t the same as acting out so many possibilities with a Barbie doll’s life or shaking a crate as if a storm was passing by.
