My Symphony Orchestra Experience at Atlanta Symphony Hall

General Reaction:  This was my first time attending a live Symphony Orchestra and it was at The Woodruff Arts Center in the Atlanta Symphony Hall. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was performing and playing exquisite music. The venue had very good acoustics but is not a large hall. Since this was my first live performance and I didn’t quite know what to expect I bought the cheaper seats and I was surprised at the quality of sound for the seats I had, and the view wasn’t bad either.

The seating in the hall was staggered so the person in front of you is not obstructing your view. Which made for a more enjoyable experience.

Prokofiev, Mozart, and Beethoven were the musicians that this concert was focused around. The Orchestra played homage to classicism, particularly in the 18th Century. Carlo Rizzi was the conductor leading the Orchestra and I believe he lead them brilliantly. It was a dazzling performance and one of the most enjoyable things to listen to and watch.

Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 was the first piece of music that was performed which has a Compact four-movement structure and was played to the Tone of D Major and is a Neoclassical piece. It seemed as if the orchestra however was able to bring a touch of modernism to the piece.  The piece flowed quite well under the conductor’s baton and was about 15 mins long and felt fresh and new as if it were a piece created within the last decade.

The next piece was Mozart’s Oboe Concerto in C Major There was a solo performance by an oboist whose name was Elizabeth Teiscione who wore a blue dress to seem more noticeable. The solo part was very magical the solo parts were difficult to hear at certain times because of the other dynamics in the orchestra while she played her passage. Despite the great acoustics in the Hall, it seemed critical where the soloist stood as to how well the sounds flowed through the auditorium. this is the piece where the soloist Elizbeth got to shine. She played the Oboe magically. The solo was a nimble and light one but was performed well. It was difficult to hear certain parts from time to time and I felt as if the soloist would have been positioned elsewhere on the stage it would not have been as difficult to hear the entire piece being performed.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 was the classical piece to end the night which tied into the evening quite well. Rizzi and the orchestra gave Beethoven’s piece which would seem quite complex for an orchestra a bold reading. The energy was excellent and had a strong musical personality that managed to turn something old into something that seemed new and promising as if it had been created in the modern age.

Overall the concert was quite an experience and I would consider watching another performance. I feel as if the more concerts I can attend and watch the deeper understanding I will have of what the conductor does as well as all the musicians and instruments it takes to bring the pieces to life. It was very enjoyable and an experience on another level for sure and I would not mind experiencing more pieces.
