Specific Cases Include Examples of Abortions

The essay that I found most particularly useful in its ethical argument was the piece by Sallie Tisdale, “We Do Abortions Here: A nurse’s tale.” Tisdale has used many different techniques making a compelling case in her opinion of abortion. Specific instances include examples and narratives. Each can be an active mode of building support for a reason or claim. First, providing readers with first-hand examples on the topic allows them to understand better the issue being presented. This information provides context and credibility that can be crucial to explaining and arguing the point.

For example, Tisdale opens the piece describing the ordinary day in the abortion center. Tisdale starts with, “We do abortions here; that is all we do. There are weary, grim moments when I think I cannot bear another basin of bloody remains, utter another kind phrase of reassurance.

So I leave the procedure room in the back and reach for a new chart. Soon I am talking to an eighteen-year-old woman pregnant for the fourth time.

Next, narratives, many times, writers feel very strongly about a controversial issue, but they don’t think that a simple argument essay is the most efficient means to convey their message. Instead, they feel that they can argue more efficiently by telling a story (a narrative) or several, brief detailed stories. Tisdale shares the following story to explain her point of view better.

“Women have abortions because they are too old, and too young, too poor, and too rich, too stupid, and too smart.

I see women who berate themselves with violent emotions for their first and only abortion, and others who return three times, five times, hauling two or three children, who cannot remember to take a pill or where they put the diaphragm. We talk glibly about choice. But the choice for what? … Women who have the fewest choices of all exercise their right to abortion the most.” In conclusion, Tisdale shares her observation as being an abortion nurse. Although she does not directly pass judgment for those, who choose to have an abortion. At the end of the day, she is human that shows compassion for those who wish to end a life and for those whose life had ended before it began.
