The limitations are that the messages must be a certain amount of characters; you will need basic typing skills to use it; and using SMS when the issue is serious would not be good.

Social networking allows people to build social relationships with other people. It lets you create a profile by putting in your information (e.g. your age, name, sex etc.) Most social platforms let you post pictures and videos. They also allow you to follow other people and communicate with them. The potential uses of social networking in businesses include promoting the brand; humanising the brand; promoting the brand’s website; generating potential customers; boosting sales; and partnering with influencers.

The benefits of social networking are that it boosts self-esteem; people can become more aware of current things happening in the world; it’s easier to study and do research; it can help you get jobs; and it keeps people up to date on current technology. The limitations of social networking are that people are exposed to cyberbullying; it could isolate people with disabilities; it can destroy social skills; and people might disclose too much information which can affect their safety.

The benefits of social networking in businesses are that it reduces the money used for marketing (the money can be used to create more products); it can increase sales; it can increased the amount of people that go to the business’s website; and it makes it easier to see customer feedback. The limitations of social networking in businesses are that if you don’t have a clear strategy then it can negatively affect your business; it needs daily monitoring to promote the business; if you don’t actively manage your social media account then you won’t get any benefits from it; you can get unwanted attention from social media (e.g. bullying); and having more exposure online means that there are more risks (e.g. getting hacked).

The limitations of VoIP are that it needs continuous power supply and internet; the voice and call quality can be poor; and when calling 999 it will only provide the address that was used to set up.

The benefits of VoIP in businesses are that you get immediate response (unlike emails where you need to wait for the receiver to get the message); phone calls can be made 24/7 (so it isn’t limited); most businesses have telephones already; calls are free (so there are no extra fees); if there is an answerphone then you can leave a message in it; and its free to call people anywhere. The limitations of VoIP in businesses are that if you want an immediate response then the person has to be available to take the call; the line might be engaged; if there is noise or interference then the quality of the call will be bad; you can see the person so non-verbal communication will be lost; and if you need to record things being said in the call it can be difficult.

Personal Assistants

A personal assistant is a person who assists with a specific person with their daily business or personal tasks. They deal with phone calls; organises meetings; books and arranges travel; reminds the person of important tasks; manage databases and filing systems. The potential uses of personal assistants include answering phone calls; taking notes; scheduling meetings; emailing; texting; and doing other jobs.

The benefits of being a personal assistant are that you will be able to go to client’s parties; you can develop more skills; getting freebies that clients didn’t want; meeting interesting people; the power that the boss relies on you for everything; and every day could be different. The limitations of being a personal assistant are that your boss could ask you to do questionable tasks.

The benefits of instant messaging are that it allows you to chat with people in ‘real-time’; it allows you to feel more connected with friends and family; and it’s useful for customer support contact. The limitations of video conference are that it can be considered impersonal; international time zones can it harder to make a call; and setup cost (only if you go for the best program).

A cellular network allows people to communicate over areas comprised of cells and transceivers. It allows people to make phone calls, go on the web, and send messages. Your phone sends signals to a cell site/transmitting tower from the sender’s cell phone to the receiver’s cell phone. The potential uses of a cellular network in businesses include making calls; messaging; and making video calls.

The benefits of the cellular network are that while roaming, it provides voice/data services; it’s easy to maintain; it’s easy to update the equipment; when mobile phones switch on it immediately connects to a cellular network; and it can connect fixed and wireless telephone users. The limitations of cellular are that it offers lower data rate compared to wired networks; the communication can be affected by physical things, climatic conditions and by other wireless devices; and there are security vulnerabilities.

The benefits of a cellular network in businesses are that it can improve customer service; it can allow people to work from home; it can increase productivity; and it allows people to stay in contact with their clients, suppliers, customers etc. The limitations of a cellular network in businesses are that it can disrupt people from working; and if the business doesn’t say what time to contact them then you can get unexpected calls (affects your personal life).


The satellite orbits the earth and allows people to do jobs including communication, navigation, television broadcasting, mapping, scientific research and military. Your device sends a signal through your modem to the satellite dish then it goes to the provider’s satellite and then the signal goes to the provider. The signal transmits to the provider’s satellite then to your satellite and your computer. The potential uses of satellite in businesses include adverting; making phone calls; and researching scientific information (science-based business).

The benefits of a satellite are that it covers large geographic areas; it is affordable; you don’t need a phone to have satellite internet; and satellite internet can handle high bandwidth. The limitations of a satellite are that the propagation delay is unavoidable; there are noise and inference; it is slower than cable; and the weather can affect the signal path of the internet.


In conclusion, there are a lot of different forms of communication for business and personal use. I have discussed the purpose of each form; how each of them works; and their benefits and limitations. I can’t judge which form is the best because they all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Also, each form is good for a certain purpose. For example, for formal messages, emails and calls might be a good use of it but SMS may be considered informal.
