Running Head: Values Reflection Paper

As a counselor-in-training, I face difficult circumstances each day. My patience is tested each day as I have to make tough decisions in my profession and life. I, therefore, have values to guide my daily working while shaping my reactions and priorities. They act as markers thus helping in determining whether my life is headed in the right direction and what to when it is out of the way. Whenever I realize that my words and actions are aligned with my values, I feel satisfied and confident.

On the other hand, acting contrary to my values brings unhappiness and anxiety and therefore I have to correct this. It is therefore notable that my identifying and keeping to my values, I keep anxiety low while feeling a sense of self-awareness and personal worth.

Values that Guide My Life

Even though there are a number of values that guide my personal and professional life, I feel that the topmost three are a commitment, optimism, and caring.

Through commitment, I always ensure that I achieve the goals I set irrespective of how challenging they might be. This does not mean that I set unachievable goals but rather work hard to the challenging goals I set. I am also dedicated to anything I work on including helping others, working in teams, individual assignments, and cooperating with loved ones. I am also an optimistic person. I believe in myself and always see myself achieving my dreams. Even though there are times I encounter challenges in life, these do not weight me down.

They help me identify my strengths and put efforts with hopes that the future will be bright. I believe that all the challenges I experience will soon pass and my life becomes better. Lastly, I consider myself a caring person. I mind the well-being of others. Even though I care about my feelings, I sometimes put the interest of others before mine. I am very satisfied when I make a hopeless person smile.

The Impact of My Values to My Professional Practice

With my three key values, commitment, optimism, and caring, I see hope where there is none. As a counselor-in- training, my commitment helps in ensuring that I am dedicated to my clients. Whenever I am approached by a client, I am committed to seeing him or her solve his/ her problems. Since I am optimistic, I am not scared by challenges. There are times I am presented with cases that seem impossible. However, with my commitment and optimism, I always get a solution. It does not matter how long it takes to have a problem solved. My aim is to have it solved by putting all my efforts. As a result of my caring personality, I cannot rest before I help a client out the experienced challenges. I consult when necessary, do thorough research, and through dedication, help any client who comes my way. Through my caring personality, when dealing with a client, his or her interests come before mine.

My caring character does not mean that I only care about others and forget about myself. I understand that through self-care, I would be in a better position to care for others. It is only when I am comfortable with nothing disrupting my thinking that I will be able to understand the awful experiences of my clients and help them. It is also notable that my commitment is my proof of loyalty, bravery, confidence, and tenacity. Through my commitment, I keep my promises and achieve the client’s expectations. It is through my commitment that I do not feel defeated and disappointed irrespective of how challenging a task is. My optimistic character helps me make lemonade when handed lemons. When I meet hopeless clients, my intention is to identify any strengths they demonstrate irrespective of how trivial they seem and work on them to make the best out of the situation. I like convincing my clients that the experienced challenge should act as a lesson that should make one better. We need to understand that some conditions are to help us identify the available opportunities that we should take advantage of.

Ideas for a Research Inquiry

On the topic of understanding misconduct among youths, the core values are honesty, objectivity, accountability, and openness. In order to have reliable findings, the researchers should be honest in their research and data analysis. Even though they are guided by research objectives, this does not mean that they should be biased in order to report specific results. Instead, researchers should analyze the data they collect and report their findings as they are even if they do not agree with the set hypothesis. Accountability ensures that researchers are responsible for the research and its findings. They also should protect the interests of the research subjects. This includes ensuring that they remain anonymous if they do not wish their identities to be known. Study subjects should also not be intimidated or forced to respond in a certain manner. They should be free to participate in the study and drop whenever they feel like. Openness is beneficial for study subjects since they are informed of the real objectives of the study before they agree to participate or not.
