Reading the Book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”

The book Tom Sawyer is a book about a kid who is always getting into trouble. He does this by getting into fights, skipping school, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. His character grows exponentially in the book from an immature kid to a more mature young adult. Through the whole book, Tom must overcome obstacles that are very hard to get over, and one of them includes when he witnesses a murder at the cemetery.

He acts very self-absorbed during the beginning of the book like when he tricks other kids into whitewashing the fence and when his games end up hurting others he seems to not really feel bad or care at all.

He acts very self-absorbed when he runs away from home earlier in the book the people and kids think that he is dead until he shows up at his own funeral. But decisions later in the book like when he decides to save Becky and when he offers half of his money to Huckleberry Finn and tries to convince the adults that he is turning into a young man.

In the book, the author puts hints or evidence in the book suggesting that the adults have bad judgment and or are otherwise untrustworthy. An example of this is when he tricks his aunt into turning around by yelling “Look behind you!” and escapes out the window behind her.

Other good examples of this are when Dr. Robinson tries to dig up a corpse, Injun Joe is a murderer, Tom’s father is a drunk and a deadbeat dad, and when Mr.

Dobbins whips students with no proof of them ever misbehaving. All of these things that adults do and are makes it seem like the author wants people to know that the adults are not something to look at or aspire to. Tom starts and ends the book as a mischievous boy who is always getting in trouble. At one point in the book, Judge Thatcher watches and then talks to him, saying that he would be a good kid to go into the National Military Academy and have a career in law but he has laughably looked at Tom’s character wrong. Even though Judge Thatchers optimistic daydreaming, at the end of the novel many examples of Toms mischievous and boyishness character still remain.

He would never have had the opportunity to save Becky Thatcher from the cave if he had never led her in there in the first place. In the very end of the book even though Tom has become very wealthy and gets praise from both his aunt and the Judge he still dreams himself as the leader of a robber gang looking for and finding Injun Joe’s buried treasure. After reading the book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” I see why it is one of the most known and liked children’s novel because the book contains humor, adventure, mystery, and some intelligence. The author shows his message within a familiar and somewhat relatable struggle in which a boy gets in trouble and shows he can do it himself to the adults. But he still remains the funny and mischievous kid we know him as and doesn’t become the good law-abiding citizen they want him to be. This story celebrates mischief, freedom, and being young, and shows that children shouldn’t hurry up and grow up, but have fun, go on adventures, and just be kids.
