Spending time outside also builds the physical attributes of the children. By just running when playing tag, jumping and doing monkey bars, or even throwing balls playing dodge ball or basketball. These activities develop not just the mental skills but also your physical skills. Their body will grow significantly and this is a form of healthy living. These can sum up to lessen injuries since their building up their muscles while they’re still young. When it come to their mental health, some studies has shown of children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) found that children with ADHD who spent significant time outdoors exhibited fewer symptoms. Children who play outdoors regularly are more curious, self-directed and likely to stay with a task longer. Children who spend most of their time indoors with little exposure to activities requiring their own initiation show less ability to initiate or participate in new activities.

As children, everything we experience shapes our lives. It fills our interests and passions. A renowned researcher once said “the quality of an experience is dependent on both the individual’s immediate reaction and the ongoing influence it may have – an agreeable reaction can leave your mind open to other, similar, opportunities” John Dewey. It means everything we experience can affect or influence our own minds open to opportunity. You will learn a lot of things when you spend your time outside, like your safety and being secured to your surroundings, you doing socializing with other people which can increase your self-traits. It’s better to experience outside your house where you can see all the things that makes you amazed.

CHILDREN’S ENERGY FOR EFFICIENCY

Using electricity is very essential nowadays, from televisions, lights, washing machines, and all other appliances uses electricity to make our lives easy. Energy consumption is very expensive especially on large facilities and an orphanage only depends from funds which will be very difficult to obtain. The question is, how to save energy without compromising the lives of the users? Well, there are a lot of research and innovations pertaining to converting energy to electricity and using it in an orphanage will definitely be in great use. Children are very energetic, they love to play out doors, they always run, playing games with other children, and also play sports. Using their energy, it can be converted to electricity at the same time they’re having fun.

There is an innovation called Pavegen. “Pavegen is the global leader in converting footsteps into off-grid power and data. We supply both permanent installations and experiential activations and can power off-grid applications such as lighting, data capture and transmission, and environmental monitoring. Each footstep on a Pavegen walkway generates 2 to 4 joules of off-grid electrical energy or around 5 watts of power for the duration of a footstep. Bluetooth beacons in the system connect to smartphones, rewarding users for their steps and generating permission-based analytics. The tech can operate as a standalone or be embedded simply into existing web platforms.” (Pavegen, 2019). With this technology, it can be used on the lights outside the premises or even inside. It can be use as an alternative source of power that give light during the night with the help of the children’s energy.

Not only from walking that they can store energy bot also from static or friction. Researchers at Georgia Tech have been developing an alternative method of harnessing our movement that relies on static electricity and friction while increasing the potential for energy harvesting significantly. It can be apply from installing it to the playground equipment where the children will most likely use such as slide, swing, seesaw, etc. By using all these technologies, not only the children will have fun but they will also benefit from it.

EFFECTS OF NATURE TO CHILDREN

Time spent in nature has health benefits, both physical and emotional. Nature therapy is a tool that helps to manage attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, stress, anxiety, and depression. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can help with recall and memory, problem-solving, and creativity. Nature has been the platform for many people to discover their abilities and make life-changing breakthroughs. This list of physical and mental benefits associated with the outdoors will not motivate young children to engage in nature-based outdoor activities. Rather, children will be motivated if these experiences are fun. Wherein a teacher who can try to decorate the classroom to stimulate student interest, use the most stimulating “classroom” available and go outside. When they take their students outside for some outdoor class activities, they immediately become more enthusiastic and aware of their environment. Their smiles are always bigger when the lesson takes place outside. Research conducted in 2010 by One Poll in the UK reported that “85% of children age 6-12 were longing for more adventure in their lives with 85% of parents saying adventure should be an important part of their kids’ lives.” Yet it also reported that “50% of children had never taken part in any adventure sports, and 40% of parents said they didn’t have time or money to partake in adventure activities with their children.”

Giving children the time to spend outdoors and encouraging a connection with nature is very important and also worth giving. For this to continue we need inspired the children to take care our environment for it can sustain for the next generation and also for the life of our world. Protecting our natural world is a responsibility that we inherit the day we are born it is every adult’s duty to teach the children about environment awareness. We need to care, and to care we need a connection and an understanding that we are part of the natural environment.

ARCHITECTURE FOR CHILDREN

Architecture is for everyone, it serves a great purpose to provide shelter, comfort, aesthetics, and easy life for all people, and every user has its own Architecture.

The environment should support contemporary pedagogy by enabling pedagogy activities. For instance, if pedagogy promotes self-learning, the design elements should accessible to kids that will adapt to their size and height so that they can use it at ease. The environment should be open and flexible so that the children will be encourage to explore the spaces.

Childhood development tends to involve children in playing, creating, and learning activities with the practice of doing for the children to learn easier. Contemporary education tends to develop students to be more adaptable, creative, collaborative, responsive, and self-directed.

Safety and fun are the two most main consideration in designing all spaces for children. There are a lot of factors in ensuring their safety, from designing elements with round edges for preventing bumps, to carpeting and padding, to orienting all rooms lower for the children won’t fall down. When it comes to fun, children are natural born explorers where they love to explore and discover all things, and places, where they will gain experience and knowledge from it. Color, texture, and tactility will play an important role in designing a stimulating place for the children to learn. Spaces for quiet contemplation are as important as spaces for active play and discovery. For the caregivers, creative and out-of-the-way storage facility are also essential. Storage solutions can be achieved by concealing shelves behind doors and walls, and making it appealing to be considered as part of the design of the space.

In this thesis proposal, it will focus on Architecture that would be suitable for children and based on some sources it has something to do with everything relating to Architecture and Psychological behavior of children, from the colors that will be used up to the allocation of each spaces. To be exact, it has something to do on what considerations that must be consider that will affect the greater good of the children. We must learn or observe the children for us to know what needs are need to be considered, this is where the methods of the research will be applied. In every structure, we always have someone to prioritize, and here in the proposal the children would be the target users since this thesis proposal is an orphanage.

Homelike Atmosphere

The facility should look like home to the children to make them feel that this is their home, not an institute, for them to accept the new environment rapidly. In order to achieve this atmosphere, there are homelike design elements with multiple options to choose like finishes, furniture, materials, etc.

Similar to a home, a good orphanage facility is a place where children can feel that they’re safe and secured, where they can relax and be themselves, welcoming atmosphere, and to move and play around freely.

Dimension

Child-scale elements are vital for the functionality and safe use of childhood learning environment. We must consider is the height of everything, every object that the children will use, details, and components that must be standard for the children, where they won’t struggle when accessing every rooms/space or even using them but also consider the appropriate furniture to the specific age group. Height is very important because even if us, adults, can reach that shelf or can look outside the window the children can’t which makes them stress or disappoint. Even the doors, sink, toilets, and water fountains should be in appropriate height.

Aesthetics

Next, is the aesthetics of the structures and its surroundings. We should develop their minds using their surrounding while they’re still young, by picking the right color, or even using cartoon drawings to be placed on the wall for them to learn from what they see at the same time loving it. Since they’re still children, we should let them reach to the environment and make them appreciate it so while they’re growing, they’re learning the importance and essence of nature.

Allocation

We should also provide the site as child-friendly, where we make them feel that they’re not inside a cage where they’re stuck on an institution but make them feel that this is their home where they can be happy and live normally as an orphan child. They deserve freedom, they should not be locked-up on a “prison vibe” location.

Interaction

Children likes to play games during the day. It helps them to improve their imagination. Space should be design in such their imagination would not be limited and where they can change constantly. They should feel that this will be their home and should have interest going entering inside. They need open spaces to provide conditions for their mobility, activities, playing games, jumping, running, and other physical activities. All structure should have enough space for the mobility of the children. It should create a relationship between the children and the environment to improve their creativity and innovations.
