Provide a section on the accessibility features to support a user’s needs with restricted motor skills.

Motor skills are movements and actions of the bone structures. Motor skills is typically categorized into two groups. A user can have gross motor skills or a fine motor skills. Gross motor skills is the movement and coordination of a users arm, leg or other large body parts. Fine motor skill is the small movements a user makes with their wrist, or by holding objects between their thumb and finger.

Accessibility features:

The interaction between a computer system and the user is affected by the needs of the user. Some users would have restricted motor skills meaning that there movement and coordination of large and small body parts become difficult to maneuver and function correctly. Fortunately computer systems have accessibility features for these type of users. Examples of some accessibility features would be keyboard shortcuts; text to speech and closed captioning. Each and everyone one of these features provide an opportunity or easier way for users with restricted motor skills to interact with the computer systems.

Keyboard shortcuts allow a user with restricted wrist, hand or finger movement. In order to perform the shortcut the user would have to press multiple keys at once. However this accessibility feature allows the user to press one key at a time to perform the shortcut. With this accessibility feature it makes the interaction of using the computer systems faster for the user. But with this accessibility comes with pros and cons.

The benefits of keyboard shortcuts is that one it saves the user a lot of time for the user instead of them using a mouse. As with a mouse the user would need to move it from one place to another, but with the use of a single keyboard shortcut this task would be completed much faster. Another benefit would be that it’s faster and more accurate to type with. The last benefit for keyboard shortcuts is that it saves cost, a lot of time and output becomes better. Of course for the user to perform one keyboard shortcut in comparison to moving the mouse from one place to another is inevitably faster. With time being saved from this it removes the usage of a mouse for the user. This then saving the user the cost of purchasing a mouse. With the elimination of a mouse it creates better output for the user. On the other hand the cost of keyboard shortcuts are that the user would have to memorize all the shortcuts this including complex shortcuts. This then making it difficult for the user to memorise all the shortcuts. Another cost would be that shortcuts vary from to programs and applications. There’s one thing for memorising shortcuts but memorising other shortcuts for different programs and applications is very difficult. This then going back to the type of users. In order for a user to do this the user would need to be an expert user, because of this most users still use a keyboard and mouse.

Evaluate the uses of human–computer interaction in self-checkout systems and ways in which people interact with systems such as a touch screen facility.

The design of a self check system is similarly laid out to a normal till. The reason as to why this similar type of design is made is in order for the person to able to interact with the self checkout system with knowledge of already being able to use it. In a normal till the normal protocol is performed. By Selecting an item; scanning the barcode and placing it into a carrier bag. The same procedures follow through with the self checkout system meaning that the person would already know how to function the basics of self checking out. Another design feature of the self checkout system is that it is able to identify majority of the time if something is being stolen. As once a person scans an item the self checkout system will process this information and then gain detail from this item such as the price and the weight of the item. The reason why the self checkout system would gain information from this item is to either display the price of the item to the person on a touch screen display or to capture the the weight of the item. The weight of the item is captured in order to prevent a person from stealing items. If the weight does not match the item scanned a notification would pop up addressing to the person that there is an insufficient amount of weight in the baggage area. This would then cause the person to not be able to proceed with scanning the next item until the requirements are met. So once a person scans an item they must place the item on the baggage area in which then the items would then be weighed and then the person would be able to continue scanning the next item. On to now the different ways in which people interact with systems. These systems consist of the touchscreen facility; the barcode reader and the payment services (inserting coins and notes). The first thing that would happen would be that the person would be greeted with a green button labeled start. In order for the person to press the green button they would have to interact with the touch screen facility. The next thing that would be displayed to the person is an instruction saying “please screen the item”. This means the person would need to interact with the barcode. The person would need to select the item and locate a barcode on it once it is located the person would need to scan the barcode with the barcode reader. Once the person hears a “beep” noise it means they have successfully scanned the barcode. This would then be processed to the self checkout system and be in listed onto the touch screen facility with the price of the item. After this the person would need to place this item into the baggage area in order to continue scanning other items. This would then become a repeated process until the person’s shopping cart is empty. On the bottom right of the touch screen facility there would be a fairly large and visible button labeled checkout. Once the person has done this the next thing that would display on the touch screen facility is the type of payments. These payments vary from credit or debit cards; coins; notes and many more. If the person were to select card payment the person would either need to insert there card into a card reader or pay with contactless by placing it on top of the card reader. If the person were to pick note payment there would be a slot were the person can insert the note. Lastly if the person were to pick coin payment there would be a slot were the person can insert coins. Also there are other slots were the persons change would come out of. Furthermore once all this is done the final thing that would be displayed and given to the person is there printed receipt with all of their total cost of items and a message saying “Thank you for using this supermarkets self checkout system”.

Analysis:

The advantage of using self checkout systems is that if people do not want to interact with the cashier they would have an alternative option which is to use the self checkout systems. Another advantage of using self checkout systems is that it shortens the queues for the supermarket. Making less chaotic, crowded and noisy. Also its said that its faster to use a self checkout system. The NCR survey proves this as 39% people say that it’s faster than a self checkout system and 42% people said self checkout systems is more convenient to use. On the other hand the disadvantages of self checkout systems is that it’s more prone to shoplifting. As some people would try and trick baggage area scale. A real life example is that one man tried to change that tag between a tv and a DVD. Most likely cases like these employees catch people who try and steal. Another disadvantage of using self checkout systems is that people with disabilities would not be able to access and interact with the self checkout system. The reason for this is that self checkout systems were not designed for accessibility.

Evaluation:

In my opinion self checkout systems is a good addition to supermarkets as firstly it allows people to be independent and self checkout there own shopping. Another reason would be that it’s a good perk for when supermarkets are really busy and there are a constant amount of long lines/queues. Here self checkout systems would not only become beneficial for supermarkets but it would become beneficial for the society as a whole. For example if a person is in a hurry and needs to purchase there shopping quickly they would have an alternative option which is to use the self check system thus preventing any chaos from erupting between people. Usability of systems:

Human computer interaction would impact the usability of systems through the systems becoming easier for the user to use. The first HCI would be a computer mouse. The computer mouse allows the user to navigate the cursor around on the display screen and click on anything on the display screen. The simplicity of using a mouse is very easy as it only requires the motion of the users arm and wrist to move the cursor or the users fingers to click on things on the display screen. With the mouse being easy to use it would impact the usability of systems by making it more effective and efficient to use. As firstly it is not hard for a user to use a mouse thus making it less time consuming for the user to learn the functionalities of a mouse. This then making it more productive for users to use the computer system. Also mouses are very effective as it responds to the users arm, wrist and finger movement. Meaning its very accurate when a user moves the cursor and clicks on something in the computer system. However the computer mouse does come with advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage of a computer mouse is that once a user buys a desktop computer the computer mouse is already supplied to the user. This then being convenient for the user as they would not need to spend more money in purchasing a mouse. Then saving the user money. The second advantage of a computer mouse is that majority of computer users are already familiar with the computer mouse this meaning it would require less training to understand how to use one. On the other hand the first disadvantage of a computer mouse is that a user would need a flat surface which is close to the computer to be able to use the mouse. Unless the user has a wireless mouse then the user would not need to be close to the computer. The second disadvantage is that if a user has a wireless mouse and the battery wears out the user would not be able to use the wireless mouse until it is replaced. In my opinion the development of technology such as the computer mouse has impacted the way HCI is used in society and the interface design. As in the past the way in which to navigate the cursor on the display screen is through a ball. This impacted the society as the older style computer mouse would often be clogged with grease and grime making it less accurate to use. The way in which the interface design was impacted was through the transition of a navigating the cursor with ball to navigating it with the the user’s arm and wrist movement. This improved the accuracy for when the user used the modern day computer mouse.

Some factors used in determining product usability are ease-of-use, visual consistency, and a clear, defined process for evolution.

Social interaction:

The way in which human computer interaction impacts social interaction is through the use of touchscreen devices. As touchscreen devices allow the user to be able to communicate with others in many different ways. This being anywhere in the around the world. Users can communicate with other users via text message, phone call and facetime (facetime allows the user to communicate with another user through the front facing camera and be able to see the other users face). This would in turn increase the social interaction with the user and other people. The reason for this is that now users would have new methods of communication to choose from this then making the user want to interact more with others thus bringing more people together. It betters the social interaction between people Facetime is convenient as they can facetime almost anywhere on the go. Another method of communication with touch screen devices is social media websites/apps. Social media is a wide platform of different websites/apps with the same features (text message, phone calls etc) but different functionalities. that allow a person to communicate with only friends and family or with anyone else in the world. This leaves room for users to have the opportunity to communicate with people other people besides there friends and families. Within these different social media websites/ apps there’s different ways of interacting with others. Users can send videos and pictures. They can also follow or post stuff on their stories. There are many features of communication that come with these different social media websites. However touchscreen devices do have advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage of touchscreen devices is that it is easy to use for users. The user does not need that much training as all that is required from the user is the use of the fingers. As the way for the user to interact with touch screen display is with the use of the users fingers. The second advantage of a touchscreen device is that the user is able to use software within the touchscreen device to alter the screen so that it is more comfortable for the user compared to a computer keyboard which has a permanent overlay. On the other hand the first disadvantage for touchscreen devices is that it is not very accurate. As if the user wants to click something on the screen they would only be able to use their fingers. This then making it difficult for the user to select detailed objects with their fingers. The second disadvantage for touchscreen devices is that after long periods of time of using the touchscreen device the users hands or fingers would become tired. As compared to using a computer the posture of the users body and the position of their arms and legs are all in good positions. With a touchscreen device the users body posture and the positioning at which their arms are at are in uncomfortable positions. In my opinion the development of technology such as a mobile phone has impacted the way HCI is used in society and the interface design. As in the past mobile phones did not have touchscreen devices. This impacted the society as mobile phones without touchscreen were harder to use as users would have to use buttons to navigate and perform functions. The way in which interface design was impacted was through the transition from huge brick like phones to slim touch screen ones. This means older mobile phones were much heavier compared to modern day mobile phones. This then making less comfortable for when the user uses the older mobile phones. But now modern day phones eliminated this by making slim phones allowing it to fit into the users pocket smoothly and for the user to be able to hold the phone with comfort as it is lighter now.

Cultural impact:

The way in which human computer interaction impacts cultural impacts is through the use of mobile computers. The different types of mobile computers are laptops, pc tablets and smartphones. The type of mobile computer that’s going to be talked about is laptops. A Laptop allows the user to be wherever and whenever and still have access to their laptop. This meaning that the user is able to research about various cultures wherever and whenever. This is convenient for the user as if the user is in another country with a different culture the user would be able to give themselves knowledge on that type of culture. This then leading to the user knowing about many different cultures thus bettering the users knowledge of different cultures. Also with a different culture it means this culture speaks in a different language. Fortunately for the user there are mobile translators. This makes it even more convenient for the user as online translators are less accurate than a mobile translator This would then allows the user to be able to communicate with other people that have different cultures. However laptops do have advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage of laptops is the mobility that comes with it. Due to the laptops lightweight, compact size and the built-in battery it allows the user to move the laptop from one place to another. Therefore allowing the user to be able to take the laptop anywhere. The second advantage of laptops is that once a user purchases a laptop the user would not need to purchase and additional devices. As when a laptop is purchased it comes with everything already built in such as a built on mouse (touchpad); speakers, cameras and etc. On the other hand the first disadvantage of laptops is can easily break. The reason for this is that laptops are portable meaning that the user would have to carry their laptop around when they need it. This means the user would be prone to either drop the laptop or sit on it by accident. This also means with these certain events the laptop would be prone to breakdown. This causing more trouble for the user as repairs on portable parts of the laptop are pretty expensive. The second disadvantage of laptops is the breakdown of the built in battery pack. The reason for why there would be a breakdown on a battery pack is due to the fact that it is not eternal and the fact that users do not operate the battery pack in the correct way. As it should be operated under strict rules. In my opinion the development of technology such as laptops has impacted the way HCI is used in society and the interface design. development in the uses of laptop and computers allowing users in modern day to be able to research information on the go. This then allowing the user access to information anywhere making it limitless to when the user can access this data. As the user can now do it on the go.
