Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds followed by different consonants in two or more stressed syllables

refrain
A phrase, line, or group of lines that is repeated throughout a poem, usually after every stanza.

Theme
A main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.

Tone
A writer’s attitude toward his or her subject matter

Slant Rhyme
rhyme in which the vowel sounds are nearly, but not exactly the same (i.e. the words “stress” and “kiss”); sometimes called half-rhyme, near rhyme, or partial rhyme

Internal Rhyme
Rhyme found within a line of poetry, not on the end of the line

Exact Rhyme
occurs when the ends of the words are identical–exactly the same

Personification
A figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes

End Rhyme
A word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line

Free Verse
Poetry that does not have a regular meter or rhyme scheme

Lyric Poem
A poem that does not tell a story but expresses the personal feelings or thoughts of a speaker

Allusion
A direct or indirect reference to something which is presumably commonly known, such as an event, book, myth, place, or work of art.

Alliteration
Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words placed near each other

Metaphor
A comparison or analogy that states one thing IS another.
