Despite all of the complications with both the law and regarding safety, hoverboards were likely the number one gift on Christmas lists in 2015. Less than a month before Christmas, on Black Friday alone, over 5,000 hoverboards were sold on eBay (Booth). Some may ask, “What exactly is a hoverboard?” Well, they do not allow a person to hover, but a rider can effortlessly glide on two wheels; hoverboards are a fun and portable version of a Segway, without the pole and handlebars.

The real name of these new electric transporters is the self-balancing scooter, but many owners have adopted the term hoverboard as an easier way to refer to them. The technology is rather recent, contributing to 2015 being considered by some, “…the year of the hoverboard…” (Murphy). Malcolm Gladwell is the author of a book called “The Tipping Point.” In his bestselling book, Gladwell describes some previously unknown concepts that take place in our society. One of the concepts he explains is the tipping point.

Gladwell describes in his book that “The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire” (Gladwell). So 2015 was likely labeled the year of the hoverboard because the boards “tipped.” Due in part to a number of various famous figures including Justin Bieber, the exciting and newly developed technology of self-balancing scooters, or hoverboards, has tipped into popularity during the year of 2015.
