The Hero of The Great Gatsby Paper

Teenagers typically have movie stars or sports superstars that they see as heroes or look up to because they think their great and because of how famous they are. In the novel The Great GatsbyF. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Gatsby as a hero. He is a hero because of his willingness to sacrifice for what he cares about. Gatsby shows that he is a hero by giving up his past for a new future, he sacrificed his new persona and ultimately sacrificed his life.

Gatsby was born to a poor family and have a lot of money growing up. But he always was inspired to be rich and well to do. Gatsby always knew that he wanted the rich life style. He was heroic because he changed his life from poor to rich, even changing his name. “James Gatz – that was really or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career-when he saw Dan Cody’s yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior” (Fitzgerald 98). James Gatsby is a hero because he saw better things such as Cody’s boat. By seeing his boat Gatsby wanted to change his life by bettering himself and that’s what a hero tries to reach for, which is the betterment for themselves. Gatsby saw himself as the hero he always wanted to be, even from a young age “So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end” (Fitzgerald 98). Just like heroes Jay Gatsby was faithful to the end. Heroes never become unfaithful even when they’re at their darkest points, and even with Gatsby being seventeen and also being a poor child he still was going to be faithful until the end. Being born into a poor family, made Gatsby a hero when he rose above and became rich.
