The Cathcer in the Rye: Phony Adults Paper

The men and woman we see in our everyday lives aren’t as modest and innocent as we think they are. As a matter of fact, phonies are a type of individuals you would want to try to avoid. For that reason, phonies not only hide their identity from society, but make you believe in their sick, twisted, lies. To begin with Holden Caulfield, a sixteen year old teenage boy trying to find his sense of recognition in J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye”. In the novel Holden is described as a careless, cynical, and sarcastic person who you couldn’t trust, because he claims that he is “the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life”. As a result of his actions, Holden had been recently expelled from his school Pency for failing four out of his five classes. Therefore, he decides to start his Christmas break early and take a trip to New York to start his new life. During his time in New York, Holden noticed that he was facing the same experiences he felt back in Elkton Hills. Holden believed that he was surrounded by phonies yet again. To clarify, “phonies” is a term Holden uses to identify everything in the world that he rejects. For instance, Holden despises individuals who are too talkative, too quiet, or just plain out weird. Needless to say, Holden assumes that he is the only person in the world that is perfect.

Aside from that, Holden has a huge hatred against adults and tries to avoid being one as much as possible. For that reason, when Holden still attended school back in Pency, his headmaster Dr.Thurmer tried to convince Holden to be religious and how he should pray to Jesus. This not only alarmed Holden, but questioned Dr.Thurmer if he was really trying to help Holden or if he was trying to use him to advertise his business. This cause Holden to become self-aware of adults because there’s lots of phonies out there who could trick you for their benefits.
