Research Paper – Smartphones Essay
For the Capstone project this year I researched how Smartphones affect the daily lives of teenagers in high school. Teens these days are reported being addicted to their Smartphones. Based on a study of 195 adolescents, the higher their addiction for Smartphones, the higher they scored on nine subscales of psychopathology and problematic behavior (Boschert). The greater Smartphone addiction correlated with an increased likelihood of somatic symptoms, withdrawal, depression or anxiety, thought problems, attention problems, aggression, and internalizing and externalizing problems (Boschert). The American Psychiatric Association provides a statistical perspective. They measured the severity of smartphone or computer Internet addiction using a 2010 smartphone addiction rating scale and the Kimberly Young Internet Addiction Test. They evaluated psychopathology scores using the Korean Youth Self Report. This shows that many teens today are suffering from addiction cause of their Smartphones and how it affects their brain.
An estimated five billion mobile phone users around the world may be increasing their risk of cancer. This cancer is particularly glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer. Last month, 31 scientists from 14 countries met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, to discuss whether exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, such as heavy use of mobile phones, poses a risk to long-term health. Jonathan Samet, the chairman of the working group provides an expert perspective. He said, “The evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough to support a conclusion that there could be some risk.” This shows that the use of Smartphones can even cause cancer and people are in high risk depending on the amount they use their phones
