Pocahontas was an Indian princess, the daughter of Powhatan who was the chief of an Indian tribe in Virginia.Powhatan had many wives and twenty- seven children, one being Pocahontas.She was born in the 1950s and she was named Matoaka though she is better known as Pocahontas, which means playful.Pocahontas probably saw white men for thefirst time in May 1607 when Englishmen landed at Jamestown, and this is also thefirst time she set eyes on John Smith.While leading an expedition in December 1607 he was taken captive by some Indians.One day as the Indians stood over him ready to bash his head a small Indian girl, also known as Pocahontas came between John Smith and the Indians and saved him from death.Powhatan said that they were now friends, and he adopted Smith as his son.This brought Pocahontas and John Smith a lot closer.She wanted to create harmony between the both and this she did.For the next year the Indians and the Englishmen got along very well.They traded furs and many crops. Unfortunatly the relationship between the Indians and Englishmen worsened and within six months the diseases killed most of the Indians.In October 1609, John Smith was badly injured by a gunpowder explosion and was forced to return to England.Later on when Pocahontas came to visit the fort, they told her that Smith was dead.In April of 1613 returned back to Jamestown.Here she began her Christian faith and met a tobacco planter by the name of John Rolfe.After a lot of thought Rolfe finally decided to marry Pocahontas after she had been converted to Christianity.They married in April of 1614, he was ten years older then her.Pocahontas' husband and their young son accompanied her when she was sent to London to seek financial support.She was a success when she was introduced to Queen Elizabeth.Later on while in London Pocahontas got a severe case of tuberculosis.While in bed sick one day John Smith came and pay…
