Ku Klux Klan: History Behind the White Sheet Essay
When you think of racism and discrimination, what do comes to mindfirst?It could be a burning cross, on someone’s front lawn, or perhaps the Ku Klux Klux Klan.More commonly known as th KKK, the Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist group.The slogan for the KKK is “Native White Protestant Supremacy.”There are a few additional sayings floating around.Such as: “Black may be beautiful, Tan may be grand, but White is the color of the big boss man.This group has been terrorizing minority groups for hundreds of years.
The exact founding date is unknown, some say it was May 1870, others claim that it was May 1866.The founding member is said to be Nathan Bedford.Around the time of the World War II, the KKK lost nearly all of its power and influence.They were pretty much silenced.A second KKK emerged in 1915, the founder was Walter Simmons.This Ku Klux Klan hadn’t attained anywhere near the amount of power, respect, and fear that the original group inspired.
There were supposedly many reasons that Ku Klux Klan was founded.The biggest reason being, to protect the women and children from “coloreds”.A “colored” person being an alternative name for black.Though, blacks weren’t the only group that the KKK targeted.In addition to them; Jews, Catholics, Atheists, and other foreigners that weren’t “purely American” were victims of their hate crimes.Catholics were supposedly targeted by the KKK because of people with Italian heritage, they now claim that true members of the Klan generated no hate toward Catholics.
Some of the hateful actions that the Ku Klux Klan did are: the burning – or “lighting”- of the cross in front of one’s home, church, school, ect., and tarring and feathering.This includes a rather hot vat of tar and feathers that are stuck to a person.Other things that the KKK did include: lynching and whipping.About the “lighting” of the cross, the KKK believes that this is a Christian ce…
