The industrialists of the late 19th century were Robber Barons because they had awful working conditions for their employees, they’re living conditions were good compared to their employees living conditions, and they were all monopolists. Robber Barons clearly had a lot of money.Most of the time they kept their money for themselves which is why their employees weren’t paid as much.They wanted to keep as much as their net worth as possible.Cornelius Vanderbilt had the largest home in New York City at the time.Most of the Robber Barons called their houses “cottages” as if they were just get away homes and they actually had even larger houses elsewhere.

In the meantime, their employees were living in tiny houses considered tenement housing.“The word ‘tenement’ had originally referred simply to a multiple-family rental building, but by the late nineteenth century it was being used to describe slum dwellings only.” (499 Brinkley)Some examples of what the rooms were like; there were many windowless rooms, little or no plumbing or central heating, and sometimes rows of privies in the basement.That is why the comparison between the Robber Barons living conditions and the workers living conditions impacted whether or not industrialists were considered Robber Barons.
