Where better to find a world class designer than Tesla Motors, a groundbreaking company, created by the real iron man himself Elon Musk. Elon Musk built the company Tesla Motors on his mission to rid the world of combustible powered transportation. After years of company growth through their sale of the electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, Tesla moved on to create more affordable models. So they recruited one of the best transportation designers of our time Franz Von Holzhausen, and to no surprise, he is a proud Orangeman from Syracuse University’s Industrial Design Program.
Franz Von Holzhausen was born in Simsbury Connecticut and attended both Syracuse University and Art Center College of Design from 1986 to 1992 receiving a bachelor’s degree in transportation design. As an automobile designer, he went on to design many beautiful cars and work for a variety of the top car companies in the world. Directly out of college he began working as the Assistant Chief Designer for Volkswagen, then became the Design Manager for General Motors, and then he became the Director of Design at Mazda. Over the years he became famous for his designs of high-performance sports cars and the redesign or the Mazda line. Then in 2008 Von Holzhausen was convinced by Elon Musk to design for Tesla, he went on to be the Senior Design Executive at Tesla and the head designer for the Model S and Model X.
Transportation design goes hand in hand with industrial design both through education and in the way they design products. Most often in any large company, there will be a team of designers who work together on a single project. In transportation, design teams are often made up of industrial design and transportation design majors. Most designers after college go on to work for established companies, meaning they are rarely are in full control of their designs.
