First Official Saudi Movie: WADJDA

The following sample essay on First Official Saudi Movie: WADJDA. WADJDA is the first official Saudi movie. Wadjda is a Saudi girl whose dream is to ride a bicycle and challenge her neighbor Abdullah. The main idea of this movie is to show how women in Saudi Arabia struggle and fight for their rights because of the strict religious rules. I wanted to write about this movie because I believe that the reason behind the difficulties that women are facing in Saudi Arabia isn’t religion.

Some people in Saudi Arabia and other countries cling on their old and meaningless traditions and this is one of the major reasons that led to exacerbate the gap between men and women.

Also, those people who trade women unfairly or prevent children or women from their simple rights and think that this is what Islam says are totally ignorant, but they understood religion in a way that they like not the way that Islam says.

WADJDA is the first feature movie shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first feature-length movie made by a Saudi director. The movie was published in 2012 and produced by the German company Razor Film Produktion GmbH. The movie director is Haifaa Al-Mansour, who fought 5 years to find financial backing and make WADJDA. The movie was shot in Riyadh, which is the capital city of Saudi Arabia. The movie talks about a girl who lives with her mother and studies in a conservative school.

Wadjda’s father works in oil exploration in the desert and comes back home on weekends to hurt his wife’s feelings by telling her he is going to marry a second woman.
