Passchendaele Movie Summary

World War I effected the hearts and souls of the population around the world in someway, not only in the areas where war was taking place. The war had a huge effect on Canada, whether it be gathering troops, helping manufacture goods or mourning the loss of soldiers. We can see in the film “Passchendaele,” what our home front looked like and how Canadians were impacted by the war. There was a large amount of propaganda, whether it be trying to get people to sign up and help their country through posters or group meetings.

In the movie, we see an officer bring in a war hero, Michael Dunne, to speak about his role in action. Officer Hughes asks everyone to stand and then eliminates groups such as women, elders, men not of age, previous soldiers and so on, until few men of age that aren’t signed up to go to war are left and are guilted into signing up.

As a viewer,I couldn’t imagine the impact that would have on a boy, man even in that situation. You had boys who were scared, who didn’t want to go to war, but on the other hand, you had boys who went to extremes to lie about their age to fight and defend their country, very eager to sign up. David Mann lied about his health in the movie to join, in order to live up to the expectations of many adults. Oddly enough, many of these young men had no idea what they were getting themselves into; they did not think the war overseas would be the way that it was, and it was absolutely terrifying.

Another thing that we see in the film is how it effected current soldiers. They didn’t often come back in fine shape. We see many come back injured, disabled, missing limbs, and mental disorders, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In the movie, PTSD is called just an excuse by many, for cowardly thinking. In reality, it is a very serious condition that m…
