Essay On History Of Computer

Topics: Computers

A long, long time ago, calculators were people’s fingers and rocks they picked up off the floor. Personal computers have evolved so much that now any calculation can be done in a split second by the dumbest person. Society today now relies on computers for everything. Imagine how the world would be today if we did not have such a blessing. A lot of thanks are owed to the great few who pioneered the computer and technology, for without them the world would be crippled and boring.

The first computer’s origins are really unknown; man has been creating machines and devices to simplify calculations throughout time.

The first attempt at a computer for calculating this was the abacus. It was used as a simple counting tool. The first calculator was developed in 1623 by Wilhelm Schikard. It used wheels to show the calculations and worked like a pulley system mixed with a modern-day odometer in your car. Though it was a step in the right direction it was in fact not a computer as we think of them today.

The real history of personal computers began in the 1970’s. After the development of microprocessors, individual computers were cheap enough in costs that they became retail consumer goods(Wikipedia).

In the years following the engineering departments at almost all computer companies hit the bandwagon in creating computers that any normal person could use. The Apple II was the first well known personal computer for home use. I remember using one of these in my kitchen when I was maybe 6 years old.

I would mash the keys like a blind man and just be entertained by seeing them appear on the screen. Steve Wozniak and his friend Steve Jobs founded Apple Computers and this is where the race for technological superiority began in Silicon Valley, which to this day is the main hub for computer companies around the world (Wikipedia).

Now forty years later here I am, sitting on my very own personal computer writing you this paper. Honestly, I would have hated growing up in the times of not having such a convenient tool at my disposal. I personally use my home computer to perform a good ninety percent of the tasks others once had to do in person twenty years ago. From communicating with friends and updating my Facebook status, to managing my banking accounts instantly with nothing more than a push of a button. There is almost no limit to what one can do at home with their personal computer.

They are so affordable now that literally, anyone can afford one, and honestly have no excuse for not having one. But the personal computer is always changing and getting better with time. Even as we I am typing this paper, faser, smaller, and more efficient computers are being developed. Personal computers do not only concsist of a tower and moniter now; laptops, smartphones, and even robots are starting to make a huge impact in the household retail goods market. The Personal Computer also has it’s drawbacks if not hooked up to the World Wide Web, or the internet for short.

It is like a soldier on the battlefield who has a weapon, but no ammunition. Personal computers are made to almost dependently on the internet now, and there is really no point in buying one if you cannot suffice that need. I use my computer to play a lot of online video games. I am typically an outdoors person and love to ride motorcycles but I always seem to find myself comforted by my trusted computer whenever I am injured. The biggest thing for me is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2; it is a first-person shooter video game that gets you as close to the front lines as you are going to get without saying an oath.

It keeps me entertained and unlike video game consoles of the past, online play keeps you in touch with other players so you do not sit in your house and lose touch with humanity. I do not know what I would do without my personal computer and it’s a life source, the internet. The world would be a completely different place without the inception of personal computers. In my opinion, it would be a very hectic one, with all the running around to physically do errands; as well as boring due to the entertainment factor they provide so many of us.

Computers are faster and smarter than any human brain could ever hope to be; and this is why a tool, has become a need in society. I know that sticks and rocks worked for the cavemen that once roamed this planet, but imagine what things would have been like if we had personal computers throughout time? They have only been around for forty years; imagine where they will be in another forty.
