Temperature, catalyst, surface area and concentration affect the rates of reaction. Catalyst can’t be changed in variables so I will therefore use the concentration variables to support my conclusion because I am familiar with the theory of concentration on the affects of rates of reaction. I am going to measure the gas by using the syringe method we are going to make it fair by having exactly 1g calcium carbonate and 30ml of hydrochloric acid.Equipment* 1g Calcium carbonate* 30ml of hydrochloric acid at concentrations of 0.75m, 1m, 1.25m, 1.5m, and 1.75m.* Conical flask* Syringe* Delivery tube* Stopwatch* Scales* Measuring cylinderMethod1. AveragesConcentration of acidI have put my two results into an average these results above will be the results that will be put on to a graph.ConclusionI found out in my experiment that when you increase the molar in the hydrochloric acid the reaction happens more quickly in dissolving the marble chips. The reason being is because when the molar is increased the hydrochloric acid molecules have more energy and more power so therefore the hydrochloric acid molecules are hitting the marble chip molecules with a much more bigger force and speed so therefore the marble chips dissolve quicker. An example would be when the 1m hydrochloric acid is dissolving the marble chips at a nice medium speed taking an average of 5 minutes to produce an approximate of 46 ml of gas but when the 2m hydrochloric acid is dissolving the marble chips it takes it only an average of 2 minutes for it to produce the same amount of gas as the 1m hydrochloric acid this shows that the 2m hydrochloric acid is double the time faster in the reaction of dissolving the marble chips. I can back up my theory with my calculations from my graphs in saying that the highest concentration takes the most amount of carbon dioxide (ml) per second and the least concentration of acid tales the least amount (ml) per second. For example my 0.75m hydrochloric acid it produces an average of 11.3 ml/s of carbon dioxide and my 1.75m hydrochloric acid produce an average of 21.3 ml/s of carbon dioxideEvaluationOur experiment went quite well the problem is that we had some anomalies in our second set of results here is the anomalies resultsNumber of minutes0.75m1m0.5321551.51092.015142.522193.030253.537314.045364.551425.05847Amount of gas produced (ml)5847Here are the anomalies results as you can see the 0.75m has produced more gas in the same amount of time than the 1m this is wrong because an acid with a higher concentration than 0.75m should always produce more gas and have a quicker reaction time. The reason for the anomalies results is because we did these two molar tests on two different days so one day could have been more warmer than the other because the temperature does affect the rate of reaction.The method was a good way of doing this experiment but the problem I had is with the equipment. One reason is if I would had a bigger syringe I would have gained better averages for example my 1.75m hydrochloric acid went off the scale at about 4 minutes. The way I could improve this test is by having a thermometer in the hydrochloric acid to keep an average of the temperature it is reacting at so I can spot the anomalies results by saying it was to warm on the day or too cold on that particular day.
