Additionally, the researchers sought to find out if political skills could attenuate the negative effects of social stressors. The purpose of the study was to promote a better understanding of social stressor-strain relationships. To find this out, the researchers mailed surveys to 2,000 alumni of a private Midwestern university. The alumni were randomly chosen and had graduated over the past 40 years. The subjects were informed that the purpose of the survey was to gather information on a wide range of work attitudes.
Out of the 2,000 surveys that were sent out, 246 responded. Items on the survey were recorded using several different scales; 5-point scale, 3-item scale, 18-item scale, and 5-item scale. The results showed that social stressors are significant predictors of both job and career satisfaction. The researchers also concluded that individuals with high levels of political skill experienced fewer negative effects from social stressors. Therefore, those individuals are able to maintain higher levels of job and career satisfaction.

Examples of this can include conflicts with coworkers, supervisors, subordinates, and customers. Interpersonal conflicts and negative feedback from customers appear to be especially common stressors in the workplace. Social stress can also diminish individuals’ feelings of career potential and the extent to which others see them as a member of the organization.
According to the text, “organizations that cause individuals to feel confident about their self-worth and competence, the employees become more motivated to perform at high levels and had more job satisfaction. ” However, when employees self-perceptions are degraded by work place factors such as social stressors, the findings show that lower levels of job satisfaction will result. When dealing with social influences, political skills can act as a buffer. Political skills are an individuals understanding of others at work and the use of that knowledge to influence others.
These skills can help with emotional intelligence, self-monitoring abilities, and a heightened ability to influence and interact with others. What I liked about this article was how it showed the negative impact of social stress. Humans are very social and we enjoy being social, however sometimes our social lives can be negative and stressful and we need to find ways to avoid that kind of stress. Women especially tend to come across a lot of social stress whether it’s in our everyday lives or at work. This study could also be beneficial to organizations in understanding the impact of social stress.
For instance, managers should take action to minimize potential social stressors by establishing healthy workplace norms, a positive social climate, and ensuring that decisions and actions taken toward peers are not to go unjust. Organizations may also benefit from providing political skill training to their employees. I saw several limitations in this study. One of them being a lack of a truly random sample survey. Each of the subjects shared the common link of having received a degree from the same college.
Secondly, the self-report when measuring political skill. There could be a possibility of self-serving biases influencing the subjects responses. Lastly, the researchers only used a single survey in this study. It would have been more reliable if they had used a longitudinal study. Effects of Social Stress 5
