In Salem, Massachusetts in the year of 1692 the Salem witch trials ruined everybody’s lives and ignited all because of Abigail Williams. In the play the “Crucible” which is also known as a severe test, the town of Salem was considered a Crucible. The town was put through hard and controversial times. Abigail’s attachment to John Proctor makes her try to get rid of his wife Elizabeth throughout the entire play. Abigail also even threatens and lies multiple times to people to get what she wants. Abigail is a mean and selfish person that always wants her way no matter who she hurts.
Before the play even started Abigail had an affair with John Proctor. In Abigail’s eyes they are still together but John wanted nothing to do with her. Throughout the play Abigail put many people through hard times and made many people suffer. She did not care about anyone except for her one true lover, John Proctor. Abigail used to work for the Proctors but when Elizabeth found out about the affair she was fired. John told Abigail that the affair they had meant nothing. John says “Abby I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Even after what John said to her she still didn’t get it, she still tried doing everything just so she can be with John. In the beginning of the play Abby and some other girls went dancing in the forest, which is what started the whole witch trials. While dancing in the forest Abby tried putting a curse on Elizabeth to kill her by drinking chicken blood. She thought that if she got rid of Elizabeth John would marry her. At the Salem witch trials Marry Warren (Proctors servant) made a doll for Elizabeth and stuck a needle in the stomach area.
Abigail did the same exact thing and stuck a needle into her stomach and said “Elizabeth’s sole had done it. ” Abigail is crazy and selfish enough to ruin someone else’s life and blame someone for witchcraft when they have done nothing wrong. Not only is Abigail trying to ruin Elizabeth’s life to get what she wants she ruins other peoples lives by lying. One of Abigail’s traits was that she lied a lot. When Tituba got accused of with craft she confessed and said she wanted to be with god again.
After that Abigail thought this it was a perfect time for her to lie to everyone so she didn’t get accused of witchcraft and gets help. She screams out “I want to open myself! I want the light of God; I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osborn with the Devil! I Saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! ” Throughout the play Abigail calls of random peoples name and accuses them of witchcraft and lies about everything. All because of her lying is a big part why the Salem witch trails were even started.
All the problems that the city of Salem went through could all be blamed on one person, Abigail Williams. She is so selfish she yells at people, threatens to beat people up, and wishes death upon them if she doesn’t get her way. In the beginning of the play all the girls should have told everyone what really happened when they were dancing in the forest. If that had happened none of the girls would have started to accuse any one of witchcraft. But since Abigail is so selfish she ruins an entire town by threatening people her friends so her reputation and her name do not get ruined.
Abigail tells all of her friends “If anyone spreads the word about us doing witchcraft, I will come to your house and kill you. ” I would not want that kind of friend if she threatens to kill me. Also Betty went into a coma so Abigail was trying to wake her up. Abby started threatening Betty that she would beat her up if she didn’t wake up. All of sudden Betty gets up and screams out a window that Abby drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor! She also threatens Marry Warren to not tell anyone that she was in the forest with him or her.
I can see why Abigail is threatening everybody because she wants to save her name and her reputation. But everything she does it is in a very selfish way. Christianity is a major part of society within the town of Salem. Abigail Williams proves this point to be wrong. When one thinks of Puritan, they think pure, honest and loyal, Miller contradicts this idea. Throughout the play Abigail manipulated the town by lying and through her selfish ways. Arthur Miller used the character Abigail to represent a symbol of anxiety and how it affects a human being. Revenge was her way of getting back her love, John Proctor.
