Their debt became doubled and doubled. They tried to pay off the debt but nothing happens, they just became more sink into their debt. Opinion(Literary Critisism):It is a beautiful story of a husband and wife being sunk into debt and having their debts doubled and redoubled and how they made a way to settle things out. It just shows a way of settling and handling things properly as a husband and wife. This is a story of greed and of kindness, poverty and violent quarrels, hunger for new rice and for fresh fish. The book was a bit boring on the first part of the story, quite uninteresting but along the way you’ll realize that the story was merely happening in real life, especially in the Philippines where kaingin system was a culture and other traditions was done. The characters are quite interesting. In terms of the characters, you can see that from their names or what they’ve been called in the story you can easily identify that this novel is a Filipino work, aside from the language, it’s names recognize what is their position in the story like an older man calleed “Nong” Jose (from Manong)”Nay Kare”, is from nanay, and etc. It’s quite favorable to us Filipino Readers that the author use traditional and patriotic names. But to think of if a foreign people will try to read it, it may be a bit confusing to them to determine those characters so maybe the author should had use a better name. The “beautiful things” gives too much attention, like the Sound of a birds, the smell of the grass , the coming on of the night and the fragrance of ripened rice. That’s obvious in rural areas especially in mangrove forest, emphasizing that details would get the story boring for the other readers. But it’s quite a nice book overall, it’s a nice way of showing up our traditions and culture as Filipino people.
