Americsn Revolution

The following sample essay on “Americsn Revolution” discusses whether the British could prevent the American Revolution by giving the colonists a vote in Parliament.

As by Benjamin Franklin said in Poor Richards Almanac, “no gains without pain.” This could not be more of a true statement when speaking of the colonies. After a bitter war with the British, the Colonials were finally free from the King. Though this came at a great price. The country was deeply divided, the war debts were about seventy-seven million, and they had no form of self government.

Although we all know the outcome of this crisis (as we are living proof as such) it was not an easy road to travel. Though why in thefirst place did the problems have to escalate to the large proportions which they had? Could the British have foreseen the problems that would be associated with ruling a large land mass?

The American Revolution could have been prevented on the British behalf by giving the colonials a parliament vote, enforcing laws already In place, and having the king show more of an interest in the colonies.

If the colonials had been given a Parliament vote, all further retaliations and protests towards the British may not have occurred. The colonials were going through a rough time in 1765 when they had asked for a vote in Parliament. In the view of the colonials the British had been unfairly taking them with specifically the Sugar act (1764), the Quartering act (1765) and the Stamp Act (1765).

All these laws were passed thousands of miles away without the colonials consent. The colonials protested these acts by stating that they had no representation in Congress, their motto was “no taxation without representation” (Otis) However the British did not believe what the colonials were saying at all. The British had a system of’virtual representation’; this meant that the colonials were represented in Parliament, because every representative represents everybody. Although the colonies were given this response, they felt it was not accurate because there were no representatives from the colonies.
