Bud Holman: A Retrospective at Mulvane

I went to the Mulvane Art Museum on Tuesday, September 13th. I chose to look and write about the Bud Holman: A Retrospective art exhibit. Bud Holman was born on a farm in Topeka, in 1926 he first worked as a Regionalist, painting and drawing the landscape and neighborhoods where he grew up. His art exhibit tells the story of one man’s life in paint; I thought this was really neat. I chose this exhibit because as I looked around, I really enjoyed how you couldn’t necessarily tell that his artwork was actual paintings of life events but more like the modern art view of things.

Personally, that’s the kind of artwork I enjoy, the ones that make you think about what the art piece is really about and how it’s supposed to make you feel. Not having any actual painted objects in an artwork piece strikes an emotion within me that I can’t really explain but I really enjoy.

Bud Holman’s artwork was oil paintings on a panel with some exquisite texture and color schemes. Through this paper I will be discussing in more detail two of Bud Holman art pieces in his Retrospective exhibit.

The first work I will be talking about is Bud Holman’s Greek Landscape painting. This painting was oil on masonite, this piece of work was a very interesting painting to me. It stuck out to me from all the other ones because it had a very dark blue, gray, and white color scheme.

I thought this because the top half of the painting was white like the ground in winter would be and the building shapes also looked as if they were upside down, pointing in the wrong way. The bottom half was a dark blue and gray like the sky would be. So this is why it had me thinking, is this supposed to come off as an upside down painting or not. This artwork piece also had me use some critical thinking skills to try and understand it more; this is what made me enjoy this painting more. The painting also ga…
