Specifically, a review of automobile advertising over time finds a change from targeting group audiences In the past to targeting Individual audiences In present day advertisements. As a result, one can come to the conclusion that the shift In advertising strategy reflects a change In the cultural attitudes of Americans during this period.

Early automobile advertisements were designed to appeal to a group audience as opposed to the individual. In reviewing a 1947 advertisement for De Sot cars, the ext and the picture are large trying to grab the attention and attract groups of people at a time. Also, by having both a large text and a large picture, more people are able to see and read it from afar, which makes it more noticeable to the public. In addition, the automobile being promoted is not the largest part of the advertisement but it is only a small part of the displayed scene.

This advertisement example consists of a house, a car in the drive way, many people outside, including a couple of older women, and many young children running around. The picture appeals to all ages, alluding to the fact that this specific car can e used as a family car. Hence, this automobile company is mostly trying to appeal to families as their target audiences, for they were the majority of the car-buying public.

There is a small amount of text in this advertisement, which provides actual statistics related to the automobile. These statistics are viewed to present the product in a positive way and attractive way to families. In all, this automobile advertisement for cars made by De Sot is an example of an old advertisement that reflected the attitudes of the American culture.
