Animal Experimentation Essay

Animal experimentation has been performed for centuries. The earliest recorded testing was by the Greeks in approximately 200BC; over 2000 years ago (lpag.org). This topic raises a lot of controversy on both sides of the argument. Scientists claim animal testing seems to bring a lot of benefits, yet, others believe it is harmful to the animals and that there are many other ways to perform these trials. This essay will provide information on the advantages and disadvantages of animal testing and various standpoints from a range of organizations.

I will observe the arguments projected by these organizations; covering from the needs of animal testing that assure the safety of different products to the unnecessary abuse of animals in scientific experimentation.

The campaign Pro-Test states that without testing on animals our health today would not be so advanced. They say that ‘[a]nimal research has enabled us to find treatments for cancer, antibiotics for infections, [and] vaccines’ (pro-test.org). Testing on a living organism seems to be a much easier approach than testing on specific molecules or cells as this would show no effect on the other parts of the body such as temperature and blood pressure.

They claim that animal research is done as a last alternative when a whole living organism is needed to demonstrate the interactions. Not only do humans benefit from this but animals in many different environments have an ‘improved healthcare and a longer lifespan’ (pro-test.org) so it seems fair that one animal may suffer for the health of others.
