Advancement of Deaf Technology

Introduction

In the last two decades of the twentieth century, technology has gradually evolved. New technologies have been created making the traditional methods and other old technologies obsolete. For instance, in the past, the deaf community used to rely on an interpreter for face to face communication. Recently, the deaf community has been transformed by the new technology. However, this transformation may present disadvantages or advantages to the deaf people, but it all depends on how people view the situation. One of the greatest advancement in deaf technology is the introduction of the cochlear implant. Technological advances like the cochlear implant and other communicating devices used by the deaf have greatly improved the life of the deaf.

Discussion

The cochlear implant is a device that is surgically implanted to people who are deaf or partially deaf to enable them hear or sense. This device has not yet been fully tested, but the impact it is having on deaf people is immense. However, there are so many questions that are coming up due to the usage of the device (Walter 2003). For instance, will it be able to improve the spoken English through the natural way of studying or not? What will be the work of the different organizations that have been formed to fight for the rights of the deaf? On the other hand, the introduction of this technology has helped the deaf people to solve many issues that they could not have solved on their own.

The introduction of the cochlear implant has reduced the dependency of a third party by the deaf people. In the past, deaf people used to rely on interpreters so that they could be able to communicate with other people. As a result, they did not have privacy in certain matters. On the other hand, the interpreter had to spend time with a deaf person instead of doing his or her own things. However, due to the introduction of the cochlear implant the interdependency of a third party has gradually reduced. This is because deaf people no longer require the help of interpreters since they can be able to hear.

In technology, other devices like the cellular phones have evolved. In the whole world, almost every adult has a cellular phone. In the past, the deaf people could not communicate using cellular phones. This is because they could not be able to hear the voice of the other person in the other end. Additionally, they are not able to speak to the person on the other end thus, becoming impossible for them to communicate (Walter 2003). After the introduction of the cochlear implant, it has become easy for the deaf people to be able to communicate since they can be able to hear sounds. Additionally, the ability to hear sound has made them acquire the ability to talk.

In the education sector, the introduction of the new technology of the use of cochlear implant has led to a huge impact. In the past, deaf students used to have difficulties in learning thus they were left behind in their studies by the other children. As a result, it has led to the different relevant authorities including the former President Bush, to sign an act that will not allow any children to be left behind (Walter 2003). Although it is at its testing stage, the cochlear plant is helping deaf children in school to study so that they cannot be left behind.

The only problem of the cochlear implant in the education sector is that the deaf children will still require special attention. This is because something new has been introduced in their environment and they were not used to it before. This means that they have to be taught how to use the implant to communicate so that they can now be able to use the implant in a class setting. Despite the predicament, the teachers need to be taught how to train the deaf children who use the cochlear implant so that they can be able to put the cochlear implant to maximum use.

Interpretype is a new technology that has evolved in the communication industry. This device aids in the face to face communication between a deaf person and a normal person. It is a form of laptop that aids the two parties in communication. The hindrance is that the people using it should have the knowledge of the language used in communication using the device. However, this device has increase the ability of the deaf people to communicate in one way or another. On the other hand there are some difficulties in using these devices (Walter 2003).

One the impact that the devices has brought to the lives of the deaf people is that it has reduce the use of an interpreter. In the past, such technologies had not evolved. The deaf used to require the services of a third person. This time they use a third party they could have done other things. However, after the introduction of the interpretype device, deaf people are now able to depend on themselves for their communication. Additionally, they are able to maintain privacy of their conversation with other people since they can communicate with other people.

In the education system, the device has been able to help the deaf children to study so that they cannot be left behind by the other normal children. For instance, in the past, teachers needed to take special attention so that they can be able to teach the children. Additionally, deaf children were left behind in their studies because they were not able to communicate with teachers or the other students normally. In case they heard a problem in their studies, they were not able to ask questions or nobody could understand clearly where there problem. However, after the introduction of the new device the system has led to the improvement of learning in deaf children.

On the other hand this device has had some hindrances in its usage. First the machine has not helped the deaf people to have the ability to hear the different sounds. This is because the device is only for typing and seeing. For instance, in order for the two people to communicate they only have type and be able to see what has been written (Walter 2003). Therefore, the deaf will not have the ability or the privilege to hear what the other are saying to them. For this reason it has brought a dependency on the machine.

The other problem of the device is that people have to keep on using the machine for communication. This means that the fact of the deaf people being dependent has not been reduced. Deaf people have to carry the machines every where they go so that they can be able to communicate with other normal people who do not know how to communicate with sign language. In the end, they become dependent on the machines and yet they were trying to stop this dependency.

Lastly, in the education sector the device has not changed that mush because the deaf students still requires special attention from their teachers. The students do have the ability to hear henceforth the teacher will have to keep on communicating to them using the machines. As a result, the deaf students cannot be taught in the same class as the other students. This means that they have to be left behind by the other normal students in the class as they wait for the teacher to give them the special treatment they require.

Conclusion

It has been clear seen that the improvement of technology in the last two decades has resulted in the advance of the deaf technology. New devices have created to aid the deaf people in communicating so that they can be able to depend on themselves. For instance, the greatest deaf technological advancement is the use of the cochlear implant. It has helped the deaf to be able to hear and communicate with the other normal people once again. Another device that has helped in the improvement of communication among the deaf people is the interpretype. This device has reduced the use of interpreters thus raising the levels of communication between normal people and the deaf people. If this kind of technology continues to evolve, deaf people will no longer have trouble communicating.
