As a kid, I went on adventures, was always down to go out with a big group of my friends and be spontaneous. I was camping in a subdivision, rode a bike across town, hike in a steep mountain, painted a wall, go on a roller coaster, watch a horror movie, hold a spider, dress up for Halloween and get messy and jump in large puddles while raining.

I just want to get the most out of life and live the happiest way possible. I was 7 years old when I first held a volleyball and it seemed fun watching my friends play it. They taught me the basics and I did not understand what it was for but from then on, I was obsessed with the game. I was 8 when I first joined a junior intramural sport and played volleyball.

I had no choice back then because there were not a lot of kids who were used to playing the sport. I honestly screwed up the game and we lost it against the winning team. Regardless of how I am ashamed of my performance, I have never felt more happier than playing the sport. My mother, once a high school varsity volleyball player, taught me to practice every skill that I need to possess while my twin sister also joined our favorite hangout activity together. I remember playing volleyball every after school and even up until 12 noon of midnight, the security guard who roams around the subdivision, scold us for not following the curfews.

I was 12 when I first played the real deal, and I immediately fell in love with it. I realize that each day I am also creating a bond with the girls by my side. I eat with them, train with them, fight with them and for them but at the end of the day we play because it is about everything that makes it amazing.

How would you classify this occupation?

Leisure and play participation take place particularly in the involvement of sports. Leisure is defined through time, activity, and experience (Hurd & Anderson, 2011; Kelly, 2012). Life is only as meaningful as the activities you spend time doing. Most of the times, I don’t mind being home late at night after training. I don’t mind having scars and bruise that I get from playing volleyball. I spent endless hours at weekend tournaments, at court, at school and even at parks just so I could play because I used this sport as something, I can divert my attention away from the external pressures brought about by school, family and others. I also became close with my high school friends because we all shared a common hobby that we liked, that of which is, playing volleyball. There’s nothing better for those few hours than playing one of my favorite games with some of my favorite people

Regardless of the lapses and flaws I have in my game, I strived to get better. I grinded day-in-and-day-out. I loved the competition it gave me. It was all because of hope and love. The rubbery smell of the ball, the squeaky sound of the court, the bruises it gave my knees, I loved them all. Playing a sport and in games made me feel alive. Hearing the first whistle, I always had butterflies and anxiety, but it was a just feeling I got to experience over and over, and it never got old. It’s more than just the big victories and breaking records, it’s being part of something bigger than yourself.

Never give an opponent an easy ball.

To always put my all in. My teammates and coaches who became a family.

The friends I made in other schools. Whether it was on school teams or at summer camps, I’ll never forget all the laughs I shared.

What skills and abilities do you have that support performance of this occupation?

Understanding how performance of skills relates to the scoring of points is certainly useful for athletes and coaches. Every volleyball player must develop accuracy, precision and speed of movement, coordination of motor abilities and physical fitness which becomes more and more important during plays. In my part as libero, I have specific training and certain physical fitness parameters which requires a lot of technical skills to improve on. I should be able to have to read the setter and the attacker and be able to receive those serves in order to produce a full range of defensive technical skills. I have to keep battling injuries or regaining focus after tough games in order to possess an exceptional passing skill against all serves and fast communication in defense and fast footwork. In other words, a libero is creative in alternative ways of defense. All in all, a level of excellent general fitness and recovery one should possess.

How are some of the environmental factors that support performance of this occupation?

Throughout high school, I have been given all these awesome ideas of what college will be like, and for some reason when I get there, it is totally different. I once dreamed of being a volleyball player in a reputable university, but I realized that kind of dream fade away as you get busy finishing college. There were a lot of circumstances to go through before becoming an elite player. It requires a lot of preparation for physical and mental training, proper nutrition, and recovery. These factors, for the most part, are all factors that can be controlled. Playing volleyball does not always give me the privilege to play but most of the time, it’s because of who you play with and who you play for. In every competition, we dedicate our games to the sponsors of the team and the huge support from our school, friends and family that paved the way to reach the goal of our team.

How has this occupation changed over time?

There’s a time in every athlete’s career when the clock buzzer sounds for the final time and you have walk away with tear filled eyes. I had my lapses during training, and I thought skill would fill it, but it didn’t. I had my flaws, and no matter how much I loved the game, it teaches you sometimes you can love something with your whole heart but that doesn’t mean you can have it forever. I always knew what I were doing when I played, I knew my next move, my schedule, I listened to my coach and I had people to rely on but now, I am moving forward without it. I wish more than anything there was a way to get that time back and relive the moments that made me feel most alive. I realize just what it feels like to be part of something bigger than myself and I cherish that feeling forever.

What other occupations are done concurrently with this occupation?

I only get to play whenever my friends feel like to which brings me to other activities that made me feel preoccupied other than playing volleyball. I try to learn new songs whenever I am playing guitar, or I usually go outside to take photographs from different places. However, every time I watched a volleyball game, I feel a pit in my stomach, because I miss playing so much. I decided to join a women’s varsity team before the start of college. I consider this an opportunity to relive or recreate a part of my life that I once loved or wanted to improve upon.

How is this occupation embedded in other aspects of your life?

I think it’s because of the social aspect, shared passion for the sport, competition, exercise, and stress relief that made me feel attached to it. As I think back to my athletic career, it’s the people I shared it with that made it worth it. Being part of a team taught me to be a team player that no matter how good one person is, they can’t do it without their teammates behind them and that’s such a valuable lesson in life.

How does this occupation relate to your habits, routines, or lifestyles?

Although it comes with a great responsibility, I think one of advantages of being a volleyball player is also becoming physically active. It may take a huge time commitment, but it helped me to foster independence and self-confidence. I highly doubted that my capabilities are weak, but I had learned through sports and through life experiences that the best way to learn is to “fail.” If you can use your defeat as a way to grow, you are not failing. You are developing a powerful mindset and what matters is how I get the next play and how I keep playing. It’s not about what I do in one specific situation—it’s how you continue and that’s an import aspect for your personal growth.
