My Hobby Is Reading

Hello My Hobby Is Readingю. Hobbies are wonderful are they not? They liven up your day, help past the time, and in my case helped establish the bedrock of my identity. It’s almost an instantaneous relief if I say so myself. My personal favorite hobby is reading. Mundane I know, but I absolutely adore it. I adore picturing the worlds the author create in their works; the sights, the smells, the cities, the cultures, the people, the obstacles, the motivation of the antagonists, and growth of the protagonists.

All of these aspects are almost addicting to me which is why I continue to read and why I continue to imagine their world in my head.

Like I stated before I love a good story. From graphical to hardcove, American novel or foreign, the genre really did not matter. Not everyone had shared my fondness over a good story though. This attitude toward my hobby lead to me to become somewhat of an outcast during my highschool years.

I would always be reprimanded by my teachers for reading in class, my classmates would often give me unusual looks for not joining in the topic of their conversations.

Frankly whenever I would try it would usually end up in failure. I had tried so hard to be accepted that I had gone through what I like to call “different styles of me;” different styles of fashion, different styles of music, even different styles of friends. There was this one incident that I remember in one of my language classes.

There was a substitute teacher, so the students had a free period to be amongst themselves, and that’s exactly what they did for the most part, except when I chose to stay and continue reading a graphic novel series I had started. Instead of leaving me be they chose to throw themselves into my chair and constantly disconnect the line of computers from the wall. The situation ended with me being sent to the disciplinarian with the so called advice on to not read in class. I remember their words so well, “It causes a scene, you would be better off talking amongst your classmates.” So basically I let off with a slap on the wrist Following this incident, another incident occurred years after I had graduated. I’d rather not go into the specifics of incident but I will say that I was…betrayed by a very close friend, and I never was the same after. Days became harder, I felt no need to even get out of my bed, I barely ate. I think the only time I ever really left the house was to go to work. Miraculously though my hobby did not dwindle. Whenever a web series I was reading had updated I was one of the first to read it.

During my depression I had plenty of time to think to myself. I spent a long time thinking about my life, the friends I had made, the stories I had read, and then like a lock being opened it just seemed to click. The relationships I had made were made based on a mutual hobby. I had grown the desire to travel to see if the lands described in the stories I read were just as beautiful as I imagined. Yes it is true that constant reading had made me a bit of an outcast, but it also pulled me through my most emptiest of times. The authors of books I read all seem to describe life as a story. If mine were a story I would to think it would be an Emerald Green hardcover named Book Lover, and I’m confident to say that the protagonist has just started his journey.
