My Family Is My Castle

Topics: Family

My family are some of the nicest, kindest and funniest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with, but whenever I look back on some of the happiest times in my life, I see my Grandad and that’s why I’ve chosen to write about my relationship with him.

I think I get quite a lot of my personality from my Grandad, and I know for certain that my love for football and comedy comes from him.

Grandad is a die-hard Dundee United fan so there was only ever going to be one result. He was so certain that I was going to be a united fan that he signed me up for young Arabs, which is essentially an online group that gives young Dundee United supporters a chance to meet the players and if youre lucky you’ll have a chance to be a mascot for one of the games.

I was selected to be a mascot for a game against Rangers in the cup.

I was initially quite hesitant about the idea as it meant I would meet my heroes which made me feel extremely nervous. But I was glad that I did it as it was and will forever be one of the best days of my life.

Football has been an important aspect of my life and it is also a very important aspect of me and my Grandad’s relationship. I used to play football in a junior league organized by Dundee United which was unsurprisingly named the J league.

I remember the first time I scored in the J league and it was when he was watching me play. It was a freekick which I was put on as it was quite far out and I was the player who could kick the ball the furthest. So, I stepped up to take it, planning on thumping it into the box, and as much as I hate to admit it, I may have slightly miss hit it, but it went in my favour as the ball went flying into the far top corner, swerving and dipping all the way. I felt so happy that he saw it as it was, in my humble opinion, a very good goal and it meant so much more to me as he was the person who got me into playing the beautiful game.

In terms of watching football, one game stands out from all the others I’ve ever watched in my life and that is the 2013 Scottish cup final played between Celtic and Dundee United at Hampden Park. Celtic emerged as the victors on the day, but the 4-3 score was a real achievement against the best team by far in Scotland at the time. The atmosphere was electric and I wouldn’t have been able to go to the game I Grandad didn’t stay up waiting for the tickets to come out just so he could snatch a few for us.

But whenever I think of my Grandad the first thing that pops into my head is the time I went on holiday with him and Nanny.

The flight to Benidorm was good; it went by quite quickly because I was so excited to get there and get the holiday started. But it was worth the wait as I bought a Real Madrid jersey, a Barcelona jersey and an Athletico Madrid jersey, all of which I still have in my wardrobe somewhere. I also went on a submarine ride, had possibly the tallest ice cream ever and just enjoyed the Spanish weather, culture and food.

The Spanish food was amazing, but it doesn’t compare to the risotto Grandad can make as it has everything I love. From bacon to rice, from peas to a delicious sauce, it’s been my favorite meal to have for as long as I can remember.

However, a meal with Grandad is never complete without his signature apple and Rhubarb crumble. I like to have mine with warm custard, the definition of perfection. Just the smell of it cooking in the oven sends me into a state of euphoria, it makes me feel like a little boy again as I wait patiently as it sits in front of me, waiting for it to cool down.

Grandad always knows how to make me laugh. From silly one liners to making fun of my mum, he ticks all of the boxes. I think that’s where I get my sense of humour from as I love making silly comments and mimicking my friends due to me being raised with the same jokes.

If you were to ask him what his favourite one liner is, he say You’re not often wrong but you’re right this time. That always got me because of how blatantly dumb it was but it stuck with me. He also makes me laugh because of how childish he acts, if I ever get told of in front of him, he’ll stand behind them and make funny faces to try and make me laugh which is not helpful at the time but very funny looking back at it.

In conclusion, I get a lot of my personality from my Grandad and I know he’s been crucial in shaping me as a person. I’ve had a lot of experiences with him from going to the football to eating rhubarb and apple crumble, I’ve been lucky enough to spend this time with him and hope he knows that he will always be the best Grandad in the world.
