Much Ado About Nothing Movie Analysis

Within the first few minutes, we are greeted by the whole main cast of the movie. The start shows the casual inhabitants of the manor lying in the sun and quickly dashing back to the castle in an effort to change and get ready before the prince and his entourage of knights arrive. The prince Don Pedro had sent a man ahead of the main party to forewarn the manor of his royal presence, but in the haste of the moment, it seems the rider was slower than he should have been.

The series of events leads to everyone hurriedly getting ready to meet.

After the knights have arrived and settled in it becomes obvious that one of the prince’s favourite men, Claudio, has taken a particular fancy of Hero, one of the manors owner’s, Leonato, daughters. The prince agrees to ‘woo’ her in his friend’s name, but the prince’s half-brother Don Juan, who is shown not just by music to be anything but good, convinces Claudio, that the prince had no intention of ‘wooing’ her for him, but intended to gain Hero for himself.

Don Pedro found out and promptly solved the situation, because, despite what his brother might have said, he was gaining Hero’s consent to marry Claudio. Don Juan; however, wasn’t happy with that outcome so he set out to dishonour the young maiden, who had set their wedding date for the next day. That night Don Juan had set up a hoax and convinced not only Claudio but Don Pedro as well that Hero was not as pure as he would like, leading to the wedding being cut short by Claudio’s denial of the marriage.

Whilst all this was playing out Don Pedro and his friends had other things on their minds. They had taken a fancy to the job of Cupid and decided to create love out of hate. There were two in the castle who outwardly bickered and fought till their tongues were dry, and yet inwardly it was something they both loved doing. They both never would have thought they had the slightest sliver of love for each other and had succeeded in convincing the majority of their heart as much, but like a balloon, the misconception blew away the moment a needle was thrown in. The needle’s original thrower being none other than Don Pedro himself. With the help of Hero, Claudio and another they convince both Benedick and Beatrice (the two with sharper tongues than swords) that the other liked them, pricking the shroud and dropping the deception that they had thrown up around their hearts. And thus they soon realised that they had feelings for each other and their verbal swords were dulled.

Now a classical father as he is, Leonato couldn’t stand the idea that his own daughter would commit such a felony, so he decided to make Claudio feel as terrible as he could by pretending that Hero had died from the shock of it all just after the wedding. And so the funeral was had and the next day happy thoughts were miles from the brain of most, but then some guards appeared with two prisoners. The guards said they had heard one claiming with dignity and pride that he had been the undoing of the marriage between Hero and Claudio. And thus Claudio felt like a murderer in his heart. He agreed on the spot to marry Hero’s cousin as a recompense for what he had caused and agreed to the closest day of a wedding he could get. On the day of the wedding, He walked up to the altar and five women walked out, stepping into a line, all of them wearing veils, concealing their features. After asking which of the women he was to marry, one stepped forward and made him promise to marry her before she took off her veil. Claudio agreed and she removed the veil, almost causing Claudio to faint for it was none other than Hero. The woman he had fallen in love with and thought to be dead was still alive! And so it ended, the struggle for love was over and Benedick and Beatrice also married. Don Juan had run away, never to be seen again, and everyone was the better for it.
