Literary Unique On Works

With a trip to the library, or a quick online search, it is possible to immediately find thousands of unique works of literature, a variety from articles to novels. All these works of literature were written by authors with a purpose in mind, whether it be to inform or persuade. These works always meet their purpose, whether the reader is aware of this or not. There are three significant forms of literature that can influence that will be covered in this essay.

This includes articles, fictional novels, and poems and epics that have left a significant mark on society by influencing or informing. Throughout the course of history, society has always been greatly affected and changed by different works and forms of literature. When musician Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for literature, his speech and the topics he addressed when he received the award for his song lyrics introduced a new idea into society about literature.

Bob Dylan brings up the topic of how song lyrics are also forms of literature, as well as how great works of literature were the inspiration behind his lyrics.

An article written about his speech and award aims to bring up an important unanswered question in society today. It asks whether song lyrics can belong in literature, and get the same recognition as what is typically considered ‘literature.’ This passage influenced society by introducing an idea that brings new possibilities into what is considered literature today by changing people’s definition of it. It shows society that literature is made up of more than books and novels, it also includes other works such as song lyrics.

The purpose of this article was to raise public awareness about cyberbullying, and let people know about the growing problem of cyberbullying and the serious problems it causes people. This article also aims to prevent cyberbullying by explaining the consequences. The article raises awareness and encourages people to speak out about cyberbullying, as well as inform people about what constitutes as cyberbullying, and how to prevent it.

FICTIONAL NOVELS

The novel The Pearl is about a native Mexican family who lives the town of La Paz. A stroke of chance leads the father of the family, Kino, to find a great pearl that will bring them wealth when they need it the most. A finding of a pearl is described as: ‘The pearls were accidents, and the finding of one was luck, a little pat on the back by God or the gods both.’ However, Kino and his family end up realising that the pearl also brings them misfortune and leads them to greed and tragedy. The purpose of this parable was to teach people about greed and how it can ruin lives. Steinbeck shows this by telling what happens to Kino’s family when he wants more than he is given, and how it leads to misfortune. This novel has been a great influence on society not only because of the story it tells, but the important message it contains. It encourages people to enjoy the happiness they have, and to not be greedy as it will ultimately only end in tragedy.

The novel The Hunger Games focuses on a setting in the distant future where there are 12 districts oppressed by one main city, the Capitol. The Capitol imposed heavy taxes on the districts and forced them to partake in a brutal annual event known as the Hunger Games. In the novel The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins attempts to entertain the audience by telling the story of Panem and the districts while using that story to criticise dystopias. She shows bias against the Capitol and it’s citizens by making them appear as shallow and cruel. By criticizing corrupted governments that take advantage and oppress the people, she has left a mark on society by helping to discourage and protest against this contemptible behavior.

In his novel Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury depicts a society that is completely dependant on technology for entertainment. Both the schools and the government discourage individuality and free thought, and people tend to avoid forming meaningful relationships with others. When this book was written, society was just beginning to develop all the new technology we have today, and we had not yet been using technology as much as we do today, although the author predicted that people would be spending more time using technology, and in his book tries to encourage people to spend less time on technology and look at the world around them. This novel influences society by encouraging people to read and socialise more and use less technology, as this is such a global problem today.

POEMS & EPICS

The heroic poem Excalibur by Sallie Bridges talks about the legend of how King Arthur became king, and recounts the events that led up to him becoming the supposedly rightful king of Excalibur. In the poem Excalibur, the author Sallie Bridges focuses on re-telling the story of King Arthur in a style of poetry. She shows a great amount of bias towards King Arthur. She portrays Arthur in heroic detail, and using adjectives such as ‘divine’ and ‘noble’. Using these type of words influences readers to believe that he is above others. This poem has influenced society by informing people about the heroic deeds he has performed and has inspired many people around the world. This poem is one of the main reasons the legend of King Arthur today is so well-known and popular.

In the beginning of the poem The Odyssey by Homer, the main hero Odysseus sets off on a journey to return home after the fall of Troy. Odysseus is described as “that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy.” (Homer) The rest of the poem The Odyssey describes the long and tedious journey that Odysseus went through to return home. The purpose of The Odyssey was to tell the story of the hero Odysseus’ 10 year journey home after the fall of Troy, and the obstacles he encountered along the way. Homer’s epic poem has been one the most influential works for literature, and it is widely regarded as a timeless classic. This is because Homer includes many genres of literature into his poem. Another significant point in The Odyssey is how Homer depicted Odysseus, as a heroic character who went through many obstacles to return home. This impacted how heroes were written in literature for years to come, and is still relevant today.

CONCLUSION

Throughout the course of history, society has always been greatly affected and changed by different works and forms of literature. Society can be affected and influenced by many types of works, including articles, fictional novels, or poems and epics. All of these categories have a purpose whether it be to inform, influence, or some other intention, and ultimately end up influencing society in one way or another.
