Macbeth Essay

‘Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted (Matthew 23:12, The Bible)’Pride is a human natural flaw that most people do not realize about themselves. Macbeth is an honorable soldier to the ruler of Scotland King Duncan. In The Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth’s main tragic flaw is his ambition which ultimately leads to his downfall. He basically sets himself with his ambition driving Macbeth over the edge for his death by having this tragic flaw. In this play, Macbeth is a Tragic Hero who is well known and liked by the general people, He is given the powerful title “ Thane of Cawdor” because Macbeth possessed so many strengths and was a very courageous person in the play, that was well deserve to have that title. In the first scene of the play, Macbeth receives a prophecy from three witches. They proclaim that he will be titled the thane of Cawdor. He responds to them by saying, “By Sinel’s death I know that I am thane of Glamis/ but how of Cawdor”(1,3 70-73)? Macbeth is way too ambitious and will kill anyone who tried to get in the way of him being the King. Ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve a goal. Ambition was Macbeth’s tragic flaw which led to his downfall in the end. A tragic flaw is exactly that, A trait that leads to A character’s downfall. A tragedy is an event causing pain or suffering. Macbeth describes his ambitious personality as being “ black and deep desires”. MACBETH [aside]

“The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap, For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at the hand; yet let that be. Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.” (1.4.55-60) Macbeth allows his own gullibility to overtake him in situations that appeal to his ambition. The witches affect his vision by telling him what is for his future and they make him paranoid about it. An example of that would be Macbeth meeting up with the witches and listening to what the witches had to say about his prophecies. Macbeth’s ambition is definitely helped by Lady Macbeth. He began to believe them and it very much affected Macbeths’s decision making for the future, Macbeth is also influenced by Lady Macbeth and allows her to take control of him and belives her for her plan for murder. My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, Shakes so my single state of man That function is smothered in surmise, and nothing is but what is not. (1.3.152-155) These ladies have not said anything about murder yet Macbeth’s first thought is about killing the king, which shows Macbeth’s murderous ambition. Now, As a result, Macbeth, who was once an honorable hero, has slumped down to become a murderous and tyrant king.

The prophecies are the foundation of Macbeth’s isolation and slump as the witches predict that Macbeth is the Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. As the witches disappear from the scene, the two exchange a couple of words with each other, “Your children shall be kings./ You shall be king./ And Thane of Cawdor too. Went it not so?” (1.3.89-91). Banquo warns Macbeth that such messages, “tell us truths,/ Win us with honest trifles, to betray ‘s./ In deepest consequence.” (1.3.134-138). Macbeth totally shutdowns Banquo’s signs. Macbeth is very foolish for his actions. Afterward, his ambition is revealed as he strives to be king. As a result of his downfall. Macbeth will let nothing get in the way of him striving to achieve more and more power which really ends up consuming himself and overtaking him which led him to his downfall which was his heroic flaw.
