INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study is to study the bakery and cake business enterprises at Precint 15, Putrajaya. The first objective of this study is to identify the problems faced by bakers and cakes operators. The second objective is to study the sources of financing obtained by bakers and cakes operators. The study is focused on three bakeries and cakes namely as Ikhwan Bakery, Breadtime Bakery and Secret Recipe. Research methods used are through internet sources and books. The results showed that three respondents faced problems of competition and workers’ problems.

This is because bakeries and cakes have to compete with each other and also compete with other food outlets such as restaurants, kopitiam, hawkers and others. The problem of unskilled workers as well as the lack of skilled workers is a problem often faced by bakeries and cakes. To start business as well as expand their business all or 100% of these bakeries and cakes acquire capital resources from personal savings and 60% of respondents obtain funding sources through financial institutions such Maybank, Hong Leong Bank and Public Bank.

For services and other sectors, SMEs are defined as firms with an annual sales value of less than RM20 million or full-time employees of less than 75 people.

Researchers choose bakeries and cakes that are one of the SMEs to carry out this study. Bakery and cakes are the establishments that produce or sell bread, cakes, biscuits, pies, and donuts. Bread is a popular food all over the world and is also the longest human food ever since the Neolithic Age. The bakery and cake companies have existed thousands of years ago and they have been developed at the beginning of the Roman Empires. The company continues to grow to this day. Bread is one of the immediate alternatives for breakfast and it is a nutritious meal. Bread made with native wheat helps maintain weight gain. According to the food pyramid, bread contains substances, calcium, iron and vitamin B. Bread with low and sweet cholesterol is also the choice of diabetics and parents.

The lifestyle of today’s people is more like eating bread than rice. This has a strong influence on bread demand. Beautiful advertising, promotion, and packaging are able to change the taste of the community to buy bread. In addition, low-priced buns can cause low-income people to request it. Consequently, bakeries and cakes are created to meet the needs and become the needs of everyday people. History of cakes comes from Western countries. It is made of flour, eggs, and sugar. Today, cakes often become desserts in ceremonies such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. During the festive season and in conjunction with birthdays, cakes have a high demand by households either buying or booking. A wide range of shapes, flavors, and decorations are also a great attraction for people visiting the bakery and cakes there. Hence, bakery and cake companies give a good response to all walks of life.
