Immigrants and the History of the Emerging American Identity

The American history in the nineteenth century was attributed by nationality and ethnicity. The debate of the emerging American identity and the makeup of the nation is in flux (Chmaj 75). In the recent years, many immigrants moved to American changing the taste of sports activity, literate, music and economic activities. American is diversifying in terms of racial and ethnic makeup composing of blacks, Hispanics, whites and Asians. In the colonial era, both European immigrants and Native Americans did not have the freedom of leadership and had decent form of dressing.

The emerging clothing fashion has arisen where women have the tendency of wearing trousers. Moreover, intermarriages and the growing number of people with mixed origin and ancestry blur the emerging American identity.

The immigrants from east to America brought the formation of early cricket clubs. The nationality played a role in America to facilitate the early native sports activity (Kirsch 12). Unlike baseball, immigrants introduced cricket from Europe and other parts during the civil war.

Before the civil war, both European and American boys challenged themselves in inter cricket clubs competition in most states of America. According to Rader (340), the emerging American identity leads to loss of fame of cricket and being replaced by baseball and other sports activities.

Rader argues that the emerging American identity is different opposed to the colonial period (Rader 346). In the civil war, indulging with alcohol and sex was out of place for emerging era. Alcoholic indulgence was associated with moral obligations and respect (Chmaj 78). The urge for immigrant new arts and music ushered a new and distinctive American.

The racial and sex discrimination is attributed with the emerging American identity (McArthur 530). Many African American and Hispanics are referred as brown and black generation. The American identity is constantly changing with mixed races and changing social, cultural and political activities.
