If I had to select someone out of a group of well qualified applicants as the Director of Admissions at a highly selective Ivy League institution, I would select them based off of their ambition and willingness to take risks. Ambition is the key to a successful collegiate and occupational future and without the willingness to take risks, one will remain stagnant. Therefore, there cant be one without the other.
Aside from outstanding academics, an important characteristic I would select an individual based on would be ambition.
Most people would choose a characteristic like talent or experience in whatever theyre specializing in in school; but I feel ambition is much more important. Ambition is defined as the strong desire to obtain success, power, or anything else you want to do; it is also defined as the key to success. Throughout my choosing process, I would make sure the applicant has the potential to succeed in whatever they want in the future.
One can always tell how much potential another has based on how much they yearn and how eager they are to succeed.
The second characteristic that is important to me, and is what I would look for, would be their willingness to take risks. Careful willingness is what distinguishes most successful people from others. This characteristic is so significant that every successful person has had to take some kind of risk. An example of this would be Ms. Oprah Winfrey; when she took a business risk and ended her extremely successful talk show, starting her own television network.
She also said, Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it., which is proof that the chances of failure might be higher, but if you dont attempt to take that risk, youll never know what you can accomplish.
I would want the applicant of my choice to be successful in his or her future. Therefore, I would look for ambition and their willingness to take a risk because in my opinion, they go hand in hand and success would not be as likely without them together. It is often too common for individuals to have an impressive GPA with no ambition or drive to keep them going in school. I feel as though they need to have some substance as an individual with some motive as to why they want to be successful; so in conclusion, ambition and the willingness to take risks is what I would be looking for in an applicant if I were the Director of Admissions at highly selective Ivy League institution.
