Futurism of Robots in Healthcare

Topics: Futurism

Are robots the futurism of healthcare? Mainstream businesses tend to be leaning toward technology as it advances. Technology has become so advanced that robots have been constructed to replace or help in fields that have a desperate need for extra personnel. For instance, the healthcare field has brought robots into hospitals, to help doctors with delicate surgeries, support caregivers, and support nursing aid. Are robots genuinely helping in the healthcare field or destroying the job market for humans, and the comfort of the patients? Scoping Review Concerns about robots taking over have caused great concern about jobs being eliminated.

As technology advances it gives opportunities to explore robots in healthcare environments, by constructing different types of robots to do certain jobs. The main two that have been created are the industrial which is programmable and automatically controlled, and the second one, which is the one I will be taking a stance on, being the autonomous robots, considered the service robots, which are found in professional and personal settings (Carter-Templeton et al.

,2018). The use of robots is said to reduce human errors, and costs and improve assembly lines and most recently healthcare. Current situations Autonomous robots are considered the service robots that are found in professional and personal settings.

Take ATM for instance, which has taken over a bank teller’s job. More and more banks are closing as ATMs are put in grocery stores, and outside of banks. Tellers are losing their jobs to service robots. Service robots within the healthcare field are found to assist the elderly and disabled in their everyday living and are used for monitoring or assistance (Maalouf et al.

,2018). Service robots can be beneficial when the nursing staff is short and can be used to work side by side with the nursing staff, but not take over for the professional. However, most elderly people are lonely and like the human interaction, not a wired interaction, as robots cannot fully understand the feelings and emotions of an individual. Service robots are on the rise taking over healthcare industries once improvements and advancements are made. Service robots are used within the operating room to help perform delicate surgeries. The robot is still being controlled by the surgeon, but it is in the works to improve the robot to operate on its own. It is noted that surgical robots are put in place to reduce the risk of error and have a more precise hand when performing surgery. As more and more successful procedures are done it is fewer jobs out on the market. According to the Journal of Service management “robot-delivered service lead to lower prices, drastically improve quality of scarce services that are increasingly important to the well-being of society (2018).

Fundamentals of care Caring is a fundamental nursing value and a key indicator of nursing quality, integral to the ability of nurses to support the health and disease journey of individuals for better results (Archibald & Barnard, 2018). With robot technology advancing how is a nurse going to care for a patient using fundamental care? Fundamental care consists of necessary activities in supporting human dignity, personal hygiene, sleep, adequate hydration, and nutrition. If robots’ merger of technology advances fundamental care will become a challenge within the healthcare field. Service robots cannot feel and express emotions but can imitate emotional response expressions. It is unlikely that robots will be self-determined in the future with real emotions (Wirtz, at el., 2018). Robots will not be able to provide the genuine and compassionate touch like a human. Proposed solutions Conclusion As it is stated it could be beneficial for robots to be within the healthcare field to be in a room with an elderly person to keep them company, but the elderly are not so crazy about robotics touching them. I on the other hand do not agree with robots merging and becoming more advanced in the healthcare field, as I do not feel that they can provide adequate fundamental care to patients. The more advance the robots become the fewer jobs there are on the market. Today, robots work side by side with nurses, doctors, and nursing aides, in the future, they are trying to make it so that robots are the frontline of care. Robots will not be able to provide the genuine and compassionate touch like a human. A robot may be equipped with all the tools to bring forth the task, but they are not programmed to show expression of real emotion.
