Friar Lawrence's Fault for the Deaths of Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two lovers from rival families named Romeo and Juliet who will sacrifice anything to be together. After a series of unfortunate events, both of the characters commit suicide, and although many people are at fault, Friar Lawrence is by far the most. Friar Lawrence in the classic Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is at fattlt for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet through his scheming with Juliet, him marrying the couple without their parents consent, and his actions after his plan is put into action.

First is when Friar Lawrence helped Juliet come up with her plan. In Act Fottr scene one, after Romeo is banished from his home city of Verona, Friar comforts the distraught Juliet by saying, “Hold, daughtert I do spy a kind of hope, Which craves as desperate an execution As that is desperate which we would prevent. If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake Athing like death to chide away this shame.

That copest with death himself to ’scape from it. An if thou darest, l’ll give thee remedy“ He then goes on to tell about his elaborate plan where Juliet fakes her own death by drinking poison, meanwhile Friar Lawrence alerts Romeo to go to her arrival, and he will come to take her away, where she will be woken up and they will get to be together. While this is obviously not only risky, but irresponsible, Juliet, who is desperate to be with Romeo, agrees, This ultimately leads to both of their downfaiis, as well as their deaths.

Furthermore, Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet against their parents willt He did not think of the consequences of his actions, he only thought of how it would end the decades long feud. Though his heart was in the right place, he did not do as much as inform their parents that their children had gotten married, and disappeared, leaving Romeo and Juliet to deal with this ordeal by themselves. Lastly, Friar Lawrence made some false actions after the plan is put into action.

First is when he hands off the letter explaining Juliet’s death to Friar John, Instead of keeping his word of personally giving the letter to Romeo, he took a shortcut by giving it to Friar John to deliver, who is unaware of the importance of the lettert Also, when he left Juliet to commit suicide. ln Act Five scene 3 when he finally reaches Juliet, she is distraught after finding out Romeo killed himself, He suggests he comes with her, but she refuses replying “Go, get thee hence, for I will not away.”, so he leaves her, and she commits suicide. Knowing her previous comments about killing herself, Friar Lawrence should have thought how she would respond to the death of her lover, and he should have considered that she would kill herself in cause, In conclusion, Friar Lawrence is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because of his plan he designed for Juliet, him marrying Romeo and Juliet against their parents wishes, and his false actions after the plan is put into play. Although he meant well with his actions, had he not done all of the following, it is quite possible that the ending of the story could have been quite different, and Romeo and Juliet could possibly been alive and well.
