Fred Hollow was born April 9th 1929 in Dunedin, New Zealand. Fred at first wanted to be a minister but after a holiday job at a mental health facility his whole mindset was changed and he started different ways of thinking. Fred was admired and seen as a great defender of people, human rights and a protector of equality.

Growing up he was always inspired by his father’s sympathy for humanity. He encountered these qualities by the work he did for the aboriginal people who could not afford to pay for their eye care.

Fred is a hero of multicultural diversity, for example he is from New Zealand and he still fights for Aboriginal conditions and rights. Fred Hollows did everything in his power to make sure the aboriginal peoples eye care was always in place, he travelled from New Zealand to Australia to help over 60,000 indigenous people and gave away around 10,000 glasses to people with no charge. That was just the start of his long journey to improve health services for millions of people around the world such as Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nepal and Vietnam.

My hero had plenty of accomplishments coming up, During his time he won three awards for the work he did, the Advanced Australia award in 1981, humanist of the year award in 1991 and lastly the human rights medal in 1990 and even after his passing Fred hollows truly left a legacy behind and that came along with his company that till today is still continued and running by his widow Gabi Hollows, called “the Fred Hollow foundation”
