Macbeth Essays

The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare is one of the most famous and brilliant of his masterpieces. The depth of this tragedy and the amount of questions it raises is incredible. So, it is only natural that essays on Macbeth are the most common - and the most difficult - of all Shakespeare essays.

There are a lot of Macbeth essay examples, but it is very difficult to put the whole play into the one short paper. Our best advice is to choose one aspect, plot turn or character trait and open it fully. If you try to divide the tragedy into such pieces - one character, one trait, one event - you will find almost an infinite variety of Macbeth essay topics.

The character development is also a crucial part of essays on Macbeth. Every character (except the ones who die at the beginning, of course) goes through massive changes. Sure, Macbeth himself and his wife, Lady Macbeth, are the most prominent examples, but pay attention to the minor characters too! The subtle differences, hints and accidental words, when they allow their real personality slip, are priceless. As most of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Macbeth is multilayered one. Searching for the hidden senses can also become one of the great Macbeth essay topics.

Another great and obligatory trait of tragedy you can use is the fatal flaw of the tragic hero - the one personal trait that brings all the misfortunes to her or him. Try to investigate the fatal flaws of the different characters, who meet their sore fate in the end! Macbeth and his wife aren’t the only ones who suffers from this “tragedy character disease”. Are the fatal traits of the characters always negative? Or can a virtue bring them to their misery too?
