Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories and the stories we read in class differ a lot in the 7 elements of fiction. They differ in characters, plot, and conflict, but the one similarity is that they have is the point of view. The characters in Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories are mostly depressed, insane, and fearful. In Tell Tale a Heart, the narrator goes a bit insane. His characters are different compared to the characters in the Gift of the Magi.

In Tell Tale a Heart, the narrator is willing to kill his roommate because his eye creeps him out. The narrator did what he felt like he had to do to make himself feel comfortable. The characters in the Gift of the Magi love each other and are willing to do anything for each other.

Della loves Jim so much that she cut some of her hair off, and sold it so she could buy Jim a present that he would love and use.

“Will you buy my hair?” asked Della. “I buy hair,” said Mrs. Sofronie. “Take your hat off and let me look at it.” Down fell the brown waterfall. “Twenty dollars,” said Mrs. Sofronie, lifting the hair to feel its weight. “Give it to me quick,” said Della. Oh, and the next two hours seemed to fly. She was going from one shop to another, to find a gift for Jim.” This shows that Della loves Jim a lot because she took her most prized possession and sold it, so she could make Jim happy.

The plot of Tell Tale a Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Fall of the House of Usher is nothing like the The Scarlet Ibis. The plot of the Scarlet Ibis is the narrator has a brother named Doddle and he has a lot of health condition, which makes Doodle very weak. By the time Doodle is 5 all he can do is crawl. Doodle’s brother is so embarrassed that he has a crippled brother, he teaches him how to walk. After practicing for many days Doodle can finally walk. Doodle flaunts his ability to walk on his 6th birthday, but his brother feels really bad because he did it out of spire, and his parents thought he was being helpful. After about a year Doodle’s parents think he is ready for school. Doodle was trying really hard, but learning wasn’t easy for him. His brother wanted to teach him how to become athletic, but Doodle was having a lot of trouble. Then a thunderstorm came and they started to run home, but Doodle was not behind his brother.

His brother turned around and found him all bloody and dead, under a tree where they found the dead Scarlet Ibis. It is really different than the plot of The Cask of Amontillado. The plot of The Cask of Amontillado starts when Fortunato insulted Montresor one to many times. Montresor was so annoyed with Fortunato that he was going to kill him. They met up at a carnival and Fortunato was already drunk. Montresor used that to his advantage. He told Fortuanto that he had the Pipe of Amontillado in the vaults in his house and that he should take a look at it. Fortunato accepted Montresor’s invitation and they went to his house. When they got to the vault, Fortunato started to cough so Montresor gave him more to drink to make him even more drunk. They kept walking until they got to the crypt. Three walls were covered in bones and the fourth wall had a hole. Montresor lured Fortunato into that hole and chained him up and started the build the wall back up.

This quickly made Fortunato sober up and he started joking again, but than he realized that Montresor was not joking and started to beg that he would not trap him. Montresor did not stop, and to top it all off he threw a torch into the hole and did not even care. These plots are very different because Doodle’s brother loved him very much. ‘Doodle, Doodle.’ There was no answer but the ropy rain. I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. ‘Doodle!’ I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis.” This quote shows that the narrator loved his brother very much. He was heartbroken to see Doodle dead because he sat next to him crying.

The conflict in Edgar Allan Poe’s books and the conflict in the books we read in clase are different. The conflict in The Fall of the House of Usher is that both Roderick and his sister, Madeline, are really sick it has taken a toll on Roderick. “Surely, man had never before so terribly altered, in so brief a period, as had Roderick Usher!” This quote tells you that Roderick Usher has been having some health problems. He has changed a lot since the last time the narrator saw him. The conflict in The Gift of the Magi is that Della does not have enough money to buy Jim a present for Christmas. These are completely different because the The Fall of the House of Usher is talking about how sick the characters are the conflict in The Gift of the Magi is that Della does not have enough money. These conflicts are not similar in the slightest.

The only thing that is similar between Edgar Allan Poe’s books and the books we read in class is the point of view. All the books have a narrator, a person who is in the book telling the story. “Now I could hear a quick, low, soft sound, like the sound of a clock heard through a wall. It was the beating of the old man’s heart. I tried to stand quietly. But the sound grew louder. The old man’s fear must have been great indeed. And as the sound grew louder my anger became greater and more painful. But it was more than anger. In the quiet night, in the dark silence of the bedroom my anger became fear — for the heart was beating so loudly that I was sure some one must hear. The time had come! I rushed into the room, crying, “Die! Die!” The old man gave a loud cry of fear as I fell upon him and held the bedcovers tightly over his head.”

These points explain how different these stories are. They barely have anything in common. Edgar Allan Poe’s books are really dark, and always have somebody killing somebody, while other books show how much two characters love one another.
