Donation as a Way to End Hunger All Around the World

Topics: Donation

There are millions, even billions, of people dying of starvation all around the world, while there are other people living comfortably or even living off of excessive amounts of food. As the cost of living continues to rise, people in these smaller countries continue to suffer. Hunger as been a constant problem for people all over the world that continues to grow more rapidly. Donations have been taken through numerous process such as canned food drives, stew pots, money, and many other processes to end hunger around the world, but specifically in small world countries like Burundi and Sudan.

Hunger to some people may be just a small feeling that they get in the pit of their stomach, but to others it can be a never ending sensation that continues to grow inside of them for time to come. These people may even wish for the hunger to end but it doesn’t because they have no way of feeding and supporting themselves.

A kind heart can help them with their problem and allow them to live a happy life like the one we all want to have. Through the act of donating, people can give back to the less fortunate and help another family have a happy life.

Canned food drives are major factors in the process of ending hunger through donations. They essentially require people to willing bring in different goods that are, of course, stored in cans in order to maximize the effectiveness of the process. The reason the food is preferred canned is because canned food doesn’t expire as quickly as other types of foods.

Canned food is usually preserved I some way, shape, or form in order for it to last longer. Since canned food is preserved, it can’t be kept for long periods of time allowing it to be shipped to its required destination and reach the family in need in time. The only issue that has been found with this process is the expiration date. Since people keep their canned goods for long periods of time, some of the donations are either expired already or will expire before the shipment can be given to the family. There are people who have to work and sort through all of the cans to ensure the food is still able to be eaten. People actually donating is another minor issue that has been recognized lately. There are many people who just refuse to help and give at least one can to the can drive. This has been taken care of by bringing canned food drives to elementary and middle schools. The students are told to bring in cans for various activities at school. There are many types of canned food drives like our very own Mississippi Food Network, which feeds 150,000 people and provides 1.5 million pounds of food every month.

The next process that will be discussed are stew pots. Stew pots are volunteer services where people have a line to feed the hungry and homeless. There are mobile stew pots where they move in different directions to meet as many people as they can as well as stew pots with one specific location where people come to them for the services. The difference between a stew pot and a canned food drive is that the food is hot and the stew pot provides other services like housing the homeless and proving after school care. The stew pot in Mississippi, for example, feeds 650 individuals daily from 17 different locations. The shelter also provides housing for 100 people. Stew pots still accept donations to help gather supplies for food and for the shelter as well as accepts volunteers. Stew pots are done every day of the year, regardless of the weather outside, people receiving food, or volunteers they have. There are even Stew pots that travel to different countries to feed the hungry all over the world. This process doesn’t provide as much food as the canned food drive and it requires more energy because of the preparation required to have the food ready. The Stew pot, however, provides a closer connection to the people and allows people without a home to have a warm meal. Warm meals are important for a person’s health, especially in the winter time when the body is already cold.

Next, donations can be made in the typical way with money. Money is what helps start off both of the processes that I stated above. Like the feed the children commercials that are on television, money donations can be taken pretty much anywhere to feed the hungry. There are numerous ads on the internet as well as commercials on the television given you directions to donate money. “Food banks, food pantries, and other non-profit organizations that fight hunger depend on grants and donations. Because food banks purchase food in bulk and at discounted rates, a donation of one dollar can purchase $20 worth of food. If everyone who attends Sukkot donated one dollar, over 11,000 meals could be provided to men, women and children across San Diego County. Monetary donations to food banks are tax deductible.” Since this is tax deductible, you’ll be able to file the amount that you gave and possibly receive the same amount or even more back from the IRS. Money is pretty much the foundation for every donation process there is and allows everything to be finished in a timely manner. Money is the best way to donate because the funds could go to any number of processes or projects instead of to one specific thing or situation. It’s like the phrase, “Money makes the world go round.”

The last donation process that will be named is the “Donate don’t dump” process. “Donate don’t dump” means food will be donated from situation where the food would have been wasted like eating in the cafeteria and not touching a perfectly fine apple. The apple that wasn’t eaten can be taken to one of the organizations or even set up in the school and allows for the food to be donated to the hungry instead of thrown into the trash. The whole point of this process is to stop people from wasting so much food when this food could be given to someone who is less fortunate than yourself. There are also situations where people have an abundance of resources like apple trees in their backyards; these apples can be harvested by crew called a gleaning group who will then donate the fruits, or even your vegetables, to the local food bank. “Donate don’t dump” distribute over 20,000 pounds of food a month. “Donate don’t dump” has the right idea when it comes to not wasting food. This is one of the best ideas because it has been reported that people waste billions of pounds of food a year and will continue to waste it. People constantly throw food away because they aren’t going to eat it instead of giving to someone else who needs it. If people can start donating more instead of throwing it away, hunger could be eliminated.

There are people all over the world who struggle and continue to struggle with finding food and even finding shelter. The processes I named are ways that people who have enough or maybe even more than enough found to help others. Canned food drives are effective with their way of storing food for long periods of time to help everyone around the world have food. Stew pots help people have a warm meal especially in the winter time and even allows people to have a place they can live until they can get on their feet. Money helps all of the processes be funded and can help purchase food and shelter as well as other supplies like medicine and doctors. “Donate don’t waste” allows people to give away the food that they aren’t going to use in order for someone else to have a meal. Food is typically donated to food banks where it is stored and disbursed among the community. In my opinion, ending hunger is going to take a lot of time and patience in order for it to be successful. They have to end it in the communities first and then move to bigger places. As long as everyone continues to work together, ending hunger will be easy.
