Virginia and Mexico colon’s in North America was very different. When looking back in history the two had very different ideals of what they wanted the colony to look like socially, religiously, and how it was to be controlled but both had same goal about riches . “What would be these two colonies home.” Differences of timing of the colonies start this uneven journey to power who would be the greatest on this long road in this new land?

Mexico had an uphill battle first, Virginia on the other hand had gained opportunity to learn from Mexico mistakes.

Most everyone has heard the story of Christopher Columbus who sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and founded America. What you might not know he thought it was India and named the Indigenous people Indians. Unknowingly to him he started the money train for the new world. Later Hernan Cortes in search of riches landed at the Caribbean coast in 1519 starting Mexico and the Empire.

Virginia would not be named until 1607 by Christopher Newport about fifty miles from James river in a marshy peninsula in a smaller area staring Virginia and its Crown.

The Aztec capital city Tenochtitlan had fallen a new empire begins. Having been the first gave Spaniard more riches than they ever thought could be posable a lot of land all the way to the Chesapeake. Now the different with the Virginia was they had two long start first coming along in 1603 King James having money from robing and killing ended war with Spaniard to take Chesapeake from Don Luis in 1570. Using his new loot, bank rolled the region with the Virginia company a private investment company 1607 to 1640, Captain John Smith And Captain Christopher Newport ran the town with seven others hoping to become rich like Mexico. Newport ran the town with seven others hoping to be rich but starved because the people were lazy and having disagreement with the Indigenous Indians some people abandon the land.

While Mexico was still building wealth unlike Virginia at that time because of the different in Mexico’s population the Spaniards, indigenous Indians, conquistadores soldiers, and missionaries. The Virginia Population was different because for the Virginians was English, scot-Irish, English soldiers and German. Unlike Spanish the Virginia did not include the indigenous Indians in there colony, but both had enslaved Africans.

Now Mexico including Indigenous Indians in there colony came with problem unlike Virginians. Mexico’s indigenous Indians started dyeing because of various mistreatment and malnutrition and overworked whole tribes was even wiped out. On the Virginia side war with the Indigenous Indians lead to upset with Powhatans for not retuning prisoner of war, the colon took his family and killed them and so 1610 the first Anglo-Powhatan War. Both colonies had a plan to fix their problem which was very different. Mexico used Religion and Virginians use marriage. By using religion like they did with the moors in 1492 from the Reconquista, the crown commanded that everyone who become catholic would be treated like a Spaniard and had most of the same rights. The Virginians had peace with the Powhattan when in 1614 John Rolfe Married Matoaka aka Rebecca aka Pocahontas Powhattan

daughter. She help sign a peace agreement and land for her people. Unfortunately, she died and in 1617. Which pushed the passions for john wolf into perfecting tobacco in 1617. John Wolfe tobacco was a cause for an economic boom. The boom gave everyone a chance to make profit free white and African men and women. Also in 1619 the first African slave came to Virginia by the Dutch to help with the boom and with money came more women. While the tobacco was booming the indigenous people where not needed as much but land was.

One problem created another for both Mexico and Virginian. Mexico because of the religion and crown control over the colony, but making all the people social equal and mostly the same. like I said it was on different levels everybody was under same Spanish Law. Virginia did not have that problem because control was mostly (the people_). The boom gave everyone a chance to make profit but Pocahontas father dies his brother in 1622 want English to leave which starts second Anglo-Powhatans war with Virginia the English now took more land. While war was going on the Virginia Company was going broke King Charles took over. The last war was 1644 Opechancanough killed a lot of English. Virginia in retaliation killed him took all the land putting Indians in reservation which then created a even bigger

Mexico and Virginia also was different in that Mexico had African slaves Africans was a part of their society, the Spanish affectively limited their maneuverability to construct Spanish America as they saw fit. Legislation and law had to account for Africans, indigenous, and Spanish persons and led to increased complexity in the workings of government. By the 1670 enslaved African out number indentured servants. In 1676 most middle class was not making money and wanted to push the indigenous Indians off their land and the nobleman didn’t which caused Bacon’s Rebellion. After the lost of Bacon’s Rebellion, in 1705 law was writing for African American called the “Slave Code” which define servants from slaves and for African American it would be the start of slavery for years to come.

Some other differences that the Mexico and Virginian had was Mexico society, they were included in the colonial system. Slaves were granted some certain space in colonial society, such as the ability to buy their freedom. Slaves had the right to earn a wage, doing small menial tasks, as long as it did not interfere with their work for their owner. As for the British, slaves were acquired to work on the vast plantations in the colonies. The indigenous peoples, slaves were granted very little space in English colonial society. Slaves in the English colonies had virtually no freedom and did not have the opportunity to buy their own freedom

so it was no problem from social aspect and they had no say.

.

African slaves in Spanish America most often worked in sugar plantations, agricultural production or as household servants. Socially, slaves were at the bottom of society, but as laborers in

By making black Africans a part of their society, the Spanish affectively limited their maneuverability to construct Spanish America as they saw fit. Legislation and law had to account for Africans, indigenous, and Spanish persons and led to increased complexity in the workings of government. While the English colonists were awarded with more maneuverability in law and practice, their refusal to include Africans within their boundaries eventually maintained slavery as an institution longer than in South America.

.

he Spanish Crown controlled everything by any means necessary they were the government. Unlike the Spanish the English colonization use a much more independent approach when it came to religion you were still under the crown but nothing was enforced.

During this economic boom Virginia seen many changes. The African slaves trade which was still set up as indentured status until 1639.

The social order was still the same not including colonies that own land had control not the crown, made it easy for the English colonies to have a same common goal and ideals about their place in colonial society, but the indentured servants were outliving there contracts and the colonies needed more land and labor force.
